About Me:
I "discovered" worm composting in spring of 2008 and have been fascinated by it every since. Since I couldn't find anyone I personally knew who composted with worms nor did my friends have much interest in hearing about them.. i got really curious if there were any other vermicomposters "out there" in the world so I set up the vermicomposters map and this community to try to find out. Through working on this website I've met so many great people.. it has really been a great experience. Thanks! Please let me know if you have any suggestions about how to continue to spread the word about vermicomposting.

Nightcrawlers from Bait to Bin

I tried to learn how to fish over Labor day weekend during a camping little camping trip at Clearlake State Park in California. After 2 days and about 6 hours of fishing I came up empty handed although my sister who was also just learning caught a 6 and a half pound catfish on her first cast! In any case, the bait shop had set us up with a 2 dozen nightcrawlers and we only ended up using 6 of them.... leaving me with 18 leftover.... so I decided to toss them in a 1 quart plastic bin with some k… Continue

Corn cob n' husk

It has been a couple days since I added my diced corn cob to my worm bin. I put them in the corner in case the worms didn't like them for some reason. When I checked it today lots of worms were hanging out in that corner so far so good.. although I suppose it will get much more interesting a couple weeks down the road when I can actually see if the cobs are being processed faster than they would if they were… Continue

My sour bin

I've finally come to terms with what happened to my worm bin for a couple days last week. I had been throwing caution to the wind and putting stale cooked rice into my bin even though I read somewhere that you shouldn't. I think I was a little shaken by the fact that anything could go wrong with my bin... then Asha messaged me asking why I hadn't been around on the site lately and I realized I should have written a blog post about my lit… Continue

Reading an interesting book about dirt.

Not much new to report on my worm bin this week. I did feed them a rotten apple for the first time though.. not sure if that is a good idea or not.. just thought I'd try. Also, I have started to get a little more aggressive with how much I'm feeding them since their population seems to be growing and there are a large number of cocoons as well. I might have to adjust my "lbs per week" setting soon. One related thing though is that I started reading this book… Continue

Yep Steven we have fished a lot. That is a nice catfish your sister is holding. I had responded to your post about the nightcrawlers and her fishing. Did you ever figure out what kind of nightcrawlers you had. I caught the trout in the pic with an artificial fly not a live worm but I do use worms on occasion with my granddaughter. That is how I got started in this worm business. Fishing can be fun ...have fun with it.

Yep the puppy is cuter for sure than me and the fish! Hey question: How did you put your photos up small on your page rather than have to scroll one by one?
How are your worms doing?

Hello Steven, I was doing a search for flow through bins and I found a comment from you about a thread called "my flow through bins" that sounds like what I'm looking for. Can you direct me to the thread? Thank you, happy worming. John

Hey Steven, what has happened to all us "oldies" on the map? I see my pin and my father's pin in Cape Town are no longer on the map. Glad to see my letter to EIGSA is attracting new members. Enjoy your wormies, Jenni

Oh wow! That's awesome. I can't imagine him living in dorms... that's so weird. If you still have that shirt, if you ever had it, I'd totally buy it from you...

I really should use this site more often. Look at homemade bins and get some ideas.

Here's a link to a zine I made about urban indoor vermicomposting if you're interested. You can download the pdf and print your own, if you'd like. I'd offer to mail you a copy but I'm fresh out. Just sent my last copy to the zine section of our library. I had a very limited run. Ran out of paper grocery bags (I always use tote bags so I had to gets these from my friends), and a lot of them were getting jammed in the printer or just generally not coming out well. I need to buy a ream of recycled paper, I guess...

I didn't realize you were the one who made this group! That's great. I'm trying to get into gardening on my very, very small balcony and pro-bono work for environmentalist groups and maybe moss graffiti. It's a pretty exciting time.

Hi Steven, yes! I sent information re the vermicomposters to the members of EIGSA (Earthworm Interest Group of SA) - they were talking about Bentley's site and I thought it would be nice to introduce this site. Glad to see some are joining up here.
