How many people have a worm bin / do vermicomposting (composting with worms)?

Well, the pile of worm bins continues to grow... with a few learning curves thrown in. I can't imagine I would have continued without this forum! I started to encounter a few... uh... oddities along the way, but thankfully, I'd read about most of them and was able to work thru them quickly. Including the appearance of MAGGOTS!!! in one of the bins. Now... MAGGOTS!!! are not something that I've come into contact much with in the course of my life... they kinda gross me out. Ok, Not "Kinda" but..… Continue

so, I've gone a little worm crazy... I'm ok with that. In doing so... I think I'm going to have to kick out a room mate to make more room for the worms. Kidding... one is getting married next month, her room will become the sewing room/ worm haven. I decided to try Bentley's 4 worm experiment- just to see what happens- see how long it takes to get a thriving colony. I found my first cocoon last night... that's after a little over a week... I'll put a little more food in there tomorrow, then clos… Continue

One of the things that I've found difficult (with learning about worms) is that everyone's got something that seems to work "for them". There are so many different ideas out there- and I need to talk things out to process them. Anyway... there hasn't been anyone. And, as I've mentioned.. the room mates are thinking I'm crazy. And though coworkers are bringing me their veggie scraps in baggies ("for your bunnies... or your worms" they giggle) they are just barely humouring me. So I've turned to t… Continue

Well. I'll confess to being a bit of a blog snob, soooo, might as well start writing here too. My bin has been up and running now for a few months... and I'm SO impatient! I need to start a second bin I think, to do some experimenting of my own. Right now, I've likely got 1/3lbs of worms... yes, they are mulitplying.. and I AM seeing a difference in the rate that compost/ bun poo is being munched into soil- but this whole bin set up process is so SLOW! it's killing me! My roommates are still l… Continue

I am not familiar with the sawdust pellets, I'll have to look into that. I did make a nifty 3-layer poo-pee separator for my bunny's litterbox which had 1/2 inch wire on the top layer that he would stand on, then 1/4 inch wire on the next layer where the poop would go, then compressed newspaper at the very bottom where the urine would soak into. It worked well, except that it is too large to fit into the door of his newer cage! I'll look for the sawdust pellets for his new, smaller litter box to see how that goes. thanks! - amy
Your bunny is beautiful. I'm guessing he/she is a Flemish Giant? I've got some Lionheads and a Mini Rex rabbit and have been working on ways to separate their droppings from their urine so I can feed the droppings to my worms. I'm afraid the urine smell indoors would be too much for me - and perhaps the worms, too! Have you been feeding your worms rabbit droppings?
I begin worm farm from 30,000 eggs of ENC,after 2 years breed, what do you think how many worms should i have? I use some special feed for these worm.
Best regards

We're from Toronto. Violet and I just got our worms yesterday. We're having fun with our worms.
Are we on your Ontario group page?
Just wanted to say Hi (I'm waving at you) to a fellow Canuck. I live in Kitchener!
BTW, that big ol' furry friend you've got there produces awesome food for the worms, too.
