How many people have a worm bin / do vermicomposting (composting with worms)?

I've added a couple fo small feedings of coffee grounds and mixed vegy & fruit scraps along with a small amount of corn meal. The worms are eating at a really unbelievable rate. They are really voracious eaters and don't seem to wait for the food to break down the way ef's do. They just climb in the food and munch away. I think the feedings have them settled down a bit and they don't seem as anxious to crawl. I just want to keep you posted . The bedding seems ok and the worms so far are doin… Continue

Well tonight I experienced my first crawl..I had to work late and had left it to my loyal partner and housemate to raise the lid and turn on the light..I was gonna call him from work to remind him but didn't get around to it. Well when I got home the worms were all over the walls of the bin like spaghetti and a few had crawled out. I rescued what I hope were all of the worms and gently pushed the ones on the walls back onto the surface of the bedding. Then I left on the light and soon they all d… Continue

Thanks for the comment Bing. I checked on them this morning just lightly moving a little bedding to have a look. They seemed pretty happy under there. I didn't see any balls of worms or dead ones or roamers so I think ..so far so good. I'm still a little nervous about feeding so I'm gonna hold off for a while. there is enough food there for a few days at any rate and I really dont want to over feed them yet.. plenty of time for feeding later. 01/17/2008. Today I received my shipment of european nightcawlers from a worm grower in missouri. I must say I didn't count or weigh or anything but I think I got a great deal. The worms are very fat and were quite active when I released them from the bag into the bin. A couple of weeks ago I prepared the bin for them using mostly corrugated cardboard and torn paper along with a couple of handfuls of peat and then a small amount of food consisting of some shredded carrot, coffee grounds, lettuce… Continue
