Profile Information

When did you start composting with worms?
April 29, 2008
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?
I wanted to find a way to keep my granddaughter’s fishing worms alive. I found that worms compost garbage and was intrigued by the concept. I bought Mary Appelhof’s book after doing some internet research and went to a Worm Conference.
What do your worms like to eat?
Any vegetable and fruit wastes from my home. They like watermelon, cantaloupe, and coffee grounds. I also have an above ground bin with horse manure in it.
What kinds of worms do you have?
Eisenia Fetida, Perionyx Excavatus and African Nightcrawlers (Eudrilus Eugeniae)
What worm bins do you use?
I have a 2x4 wooden Tilth bin, a 3x4 concrete block above ground bin, 18 gallon plastic bin, Can-O-Worms and an ordinary compost pile. All are outdoors in Florida.
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
5-10 pounds approximately. I think.

Hey Dwayne,

I wanted to give you an update on how the worms you sent me are doing. They adjusted to the new bin really fast, or maybe they were just hungry from the trip. I've had a problem keeping the moisture level just right, with my EFs they tend to get too wet, but these guys I can't keep wet. I just moved them to a smaller bin, that should allow them to be in deeper bedding and compost. The large flat surface of the other bin, while ideal for EFs, just wasn't working for them, they really like to be buried in the compost and bedding and they just kept it really spread out. Hopefully that is the answer until there numbers are up enough to fill the larger bin.

It turns out the eagle projects will have to wait, on the immediate horizon are two different science projects. We'll be heading to the local bait shop for at least one more specimen this weekend.

Thanks again this journey has been quite an adventure.

On the title bar, i.e. where it days "Dwayne's Photos" of your photos module you should see an "Edit" button. You should be able to change it there to select whether or not you want thumbnails vs slide show.

Btw, from your profile pic..looks like you're an angler.. my sister and I just tried to learn how to fish over labor day.. basically just showed up at a bait and tackle shop and said "um.. what do we need and what do we do?". I didn't catch anything but my sister caught this catchfish on her second cast!

Hi Dwayne,

Great to hear from you. My worms are doing good. I harvested my first worm castings tonight. I am not positive they were completely ready as the original bedding was coconut coir so it was hard to tell if it was the coir or if it was worm castings. It looked more black than brown to me though. I figure if it wasn't ready, the coir will still be fine in my garden and also bring nutrients to the plants. I decided to do this because I couldn't get a bunch of the worms out of the bedding. They seemed to enjoy the bedding area more than eating the scraps I gave them. Sounds like you are having fun with your worms indoors. Are the hurricanes staying away from where you live? I hope so.

Have you tried giving your worms cantaloupe yet? I just did the other day for the first time and all the hype I heard about cantaloupe and the worms was correct. Boy, did they love it!

Thanks Dwayne. Thanks for the comment on tile work and my photos. I want to add photos of the old man's set up but cant get hold of him today. I hope he is OK because he told me had cancer last time I saw him. He has indoor and outdoor setup, which just blew me away, and the most incredible veggie garden I had ever seen. I'll keep trying.

THEY'RE HERE!!! They arrived in beautiful condition. The box looks like no one ever touched it. The bag was securely fastened and no worms were out of the bag and in the box or in the packing materials. Your shipping methods were perfect, even in the warmer temps, the box wasn't warm inside or outside.

The worms are wriggling away in a temporary bin I set up for them to separate the blues out, and cull out the other outdoor critters.

I really can't thank you enough, this is great!

Yeah... I too have accepted them - they didn't give me much of a choice! But I read all your info on BSF and that was really helpful. I think they are one reason why my waste gets composted so fast (in about 1 1/2 months, they look pretty even and black). But I am also concerned about them taking over the bin.

I am no expert on identification of worm. Some of your photos, however, do look like PEs to me. I just sent some PEs to Jeannene by mail. I have never shipped worms before and she and I are hopeful they make it. She could not find PEs from a grower and so I told her we would give it a try. You may have seen some of my posts on BSF. At first I really disliked the BSF. They are not the most appealing creatures. Over time, however, I have read that they can be beneficial and they do no doubt help break down the organic material for the worms. I have come to accept them as part of the natural ecosystem of the worm world. Others have written that they have them too and I think they are common in outdoor systems.

Hi Dwayne, Thanks for starting the outdoor vermicomposters group.
I am not too sure what kind I have, but from what I have read, I think they are PE's. I also have a lot of BSF's in my bin.
