Vermicomposting, worm bin, composting with worms community and forums
After spending weeks at a time at BF house helping with projects , and then another week gone for Labor Day weekend, and then working like a crazy bastard at all of my jobs and neglecting my home,.... I though I had killed my worms.
My bag felt dry on all sides. and it was crunchy. The food I had put in from the freezer had either been eaten or dried out on top. I began to mourn ( mostly I cursed in my head all of my friends and BF for keeping me away from home....) and I started to empty the bin from the bottom.
Lots of dry composting came out and some unprocessed shells and pips, but no worms. Totally too dry for worms. I almost started to cry as I tried to remember the company to buy more worms. Then them material started being a bit less dry but still no worms. As the bin contents dumped out I found clumps, and in those clumps were all of my worms. Hooray. OMG! I and even in some of the drier clumps they were still there. A bit sluggish, but they were there.
So I finished emptying out the bin and sifted the big large unfinished pieces and the worms in them to a bucket, sifted the finished product to get the clump worms out, and then I took the entire bucket of dry stuff and sluggish worms and added water to it, and tossed it to coat everything with water and let it soak in.
I still need to sew a permanent bin, but not soon, but I put new handles on this mesh bag so it is still HOLDING UP, LOL, bad joke. Anyway, I put a wet plug of wadded newspaper in the bottom, some wet shredded paper on top of that, and then put the rewetted unfinished product, as the new bedding, back into the bin.
So I'm back in business, and my worms survived my 3+ week neglect, and I got to empty the bins of frozen food i've been storing. I put about a foot of shredded dry paper on top, since I have gotten more fruit flies in my absence.
Anyway, that's what's going on. My bin is still surviving better than any bin I've had in the past, despite me. I'm glad I still have them, and I'm thinking of stealing back the cat from my BF for a few weeks when I'm not so busy working away from home.
