Continuous flow liner experiment.

I'm still "recovering" from my Worm bin sludge situation I took all the sludge and put it in a bucket on its own and skimmed off any excess water every couple days until it wasn't flooded. After several weeks what was in the bucket started to dry out to the point that it looked like normal VC. Plus I could see lots of worm trails / turned VC where the worms that were still in there were working their magic. So,… Continue

Worm bin sludge situation

I looked in the bottom tray of my flow through worm bin a couple days ago and noticed there was a log of semi-solid material in the bottom tray and tons of worms. It seemed like they were living fine in that soup, but yesterday I decided to try to clean it up and get the worms back into the main tray.

This is what the bottom tray looked like while I was cleaning it out:…

Nightcrawlers from Bait to Bin

I tried to learn how to fish over Labor day weekend during a camping little camping trip at Clearlake State Park in California. After 2 days and about 6 hours of fishing I came up empty handed although my sister who was also just learning caught a 6 and a half pound catfish on her first cast!

In any case, the bait shop had set us up with a 2 dozen nightcrawlers and we only ended up using 6 of them.... leaving me with 18 leftover.... so I decided to toss them in a 1 quart plastic bin… Continue

The Earth Moved just came from Amazon

I orderd The Earth Moved: On the Remarkable Achievements of Earthworms last week and it just arrived in the mail a couple hours ago and I had to start reading it right away. I've gotten… Continue

Corn cob n' husk

It has been a couple days since I added my diced corn cob to my worm bin. I put them in the corner in case the worms didn't like them for some reason. When I checked it today lots of worms were hanging out in that corner so far so good.. although I suppose it will get much more interesting a couple weeks down the road when I can actually see if the cobs are being processed faster than they would if they… Continue

My sour bin

I've finally come to terms with what happened to my worm bin for a couple days last week. I had been throwing caution to the wind and putting stale cooked rice into my bin even though I read somewhere that you shouldn't. I think I was a little shaken by the fact that anything could go wrong with my bin... then Asha messaged me asking why I hadn't been around on the site lately and I realized I should have written a blog post about my… Continue

Reading an interesting book about dirt.

Not much new to report on my worm bin this week. I did feed them a rotten apple for the first time though.. not sure if that is a good idea or not.. just thought I'd try. Also, I have started to get a little more aggressive with how much I'm feeding them since their population seems to be growing and there are a large number of cocoons as well. I might have to adjust my "lbs per week" setting soon.

One related thing though is that I started reading this book… Continue

Feeding 'em egg cartons for the first time.

I saw Woo's photo of his worm bin with egg cartons in there so I decided this week I would try adding one more thing to the list of stuff that goes into my worm bin. To try to get my egg carton processed by the earthworms a little faster I decided to tear it up before putting it into the bin. Not sure how long I'll keep tearing up my egg… Continue

Tested out food chopper

Last night I cooked some of our CSA box veggies so I ended up with lots of kitchen scraps: asparagus stalks, chard stems and carrot shavings. All stuff that is pretty robust and would take a long time to soften up and be eaten by my earthworms. I got out the chopper I got last week:

and gave it a try. It was… Continue

New little critters in my worm bin.

It wasn't feeding time or anything. Today I decided to just open my worm bin to take a peek at how everything was going in there and wow I guess I hadn't taken done that in a while. There were a lot of young and baby earthworms in there. I could see at several dozen white babies clustered in a couple areas and some medium sized earth worms around. At first I was worried that I had other types of worms in my bin but I picked a couple up to look more closely and they looked like tiny earthworms.… Continue
