Using a dehydrator to help control the moisture in your worm bedding.

For a while I was struggling with having worm bedding that was much too wet.  My worms do not like bedding that has too much water.  They don't perform well and they sometimes die.  I have found a simple way to reduce excess moisture in my bedding and reduce the amount of space needed to store food.

After Halloween I received…

Composting Crushed ACORNS in a Worm Bin.

Hello there.

I was at my parents house today and noticed many thousand acorns from the pin oak trees. I collected about 3-4 pounds of them to feed to deer on our land. The thought crossed my mind that worms might enjoy fresh acorns. Has anyone ever tried putting crushed acorns in their vermicomposting bin? If so, please tell about the experience and whether the worms liked them or not.…

Purina Worm Chow---Does it really work???

I have seen some people talking about the Purina Worm Chow. I searched Ebay and found 2 people that are selling it in different packaging. There are links to those items at the end of this blog. How do you know if you are getting the real deal, or just a home-made bag of stuff? Is the real stuff even that good, or is it just an added expense for the vermicomposter? I would like to hear some responses from people who have used the Purina worm chow. What did you like or dislike… Continue

Free Halloween Treat For Your Worms

Halloween is coming soon, and that means you will probably see pumpkins on every corner. Have you ever wondered what happens to pumpkins after Halloween night? I would like to guess that a lot of them are put in the trash to be taken to the dump. Here is an idea: approach some of your neighbors and tell them that you have a worm compost. Tell your neighbors that you will dispose of their pumpkins for them.… Continue

I Modified The Worm Factory For Increased Air Flow To Trays

I own the original worm factory bin, not the new 360. I have been looking for a way to increase the air flow throughout my bin since that was a problem when it was designed. I think I may have found an inexpensive solution, but only time will tell.

I went to Walmart and purchased an aquarium dual air pump and 8 feet of clear tubing. I cut the tubing into 2 four feet sections and attached it to the two air outputs of the pump. Next, I un-screwed the drainage spout from The Worm Factory… Continue

Ok, here are the pictures of the "Dillies" that I bought at the sporting goods store.

My local sporting goods store sells a small worm that they call Dillies. It looks just like the red-wiggler and is maybe just slightly bigger. Has anyone heard of this worm before? I bought some to fish with about a month ago, and then I put them in a Cool Whip container with some moist newspaper and a few veggies. They have almost completely composted everything that I put inside of the small container. They have even produced…

Going back to red wiggler worms

Well I am starting to get prepared for vermicomposting again. I was wanting to use the european night crawlers, but I think I am going to use red wigglers instead. I have found out that the ENC will not do well in The Worm Factory bin that I use. In a few years I think that I will start up a ENC bin. I'm going to buy my worms from Bentley's website because I think he really takes care of his customers. He also is very knowledgeable… Continue

Would you like your worm tea sweet or unsweet?

I made my first batch of worm tea following Bentley's instructions on his website. The process went pretty good. I posted some pictures of the finished product below. I used Women's panty hose as the tea bag and this worked amazingly well. I bought the cheap panty hose for .33 and put one hose inside of another. I used a fish pond pump to circulate the water around the tea bag for about 24 hours. I have to say that just leaving… Continue

WORMS DEAD AND DYING!

Well, I think I made my first fatal mistake in worm composting. I added a third tray to my worm factory yesterday and I wanted to try something new. I added molasses mixed in water to the new bedding. The molasses drained down into all of the other bins too. I thought my worms might like something sweet. I opened up my bin to look at it and saw my worms behaving strangely. They were crawling up the sides of trays and very few were in the bedding. I picked up a few of the worms and noticed a… Continue

My own military defense system?????????

The mites in my bin are attacking this fly. It looks like it might be a soldier fly that came out of the cocoon and found it's way to the surface of my bin. Here is what i'm curious about: "if the mites attack the bug, will they also attack and kill my red wiggler worms?"…

The Worm Factory Update

I have been busy with work and have not updated for 2+ weeks. I'm still enjoying the worm bin that I bought back in January. I added the second tray about 1 month ago. There are still a lot of worms in the processing tray and not as many in the working tray. Has anyone else noticed a delay with the worms moving up into the new bin? I think not even half of my worms are in the new working tray. I quit adding food to the first tray as soon as I added the second tray. The only thing left in the… Continue

Question for the experienced vermicomposter

1.) Do you know about ideal breeding conditions for the worm bin? I may have heard that red wigglers breed at a certain temperature.
