Wondering what is the best bedding for your red wiggler composting worms? Here are my favorites!

When I first began composting with red wiggler worms, I was very nervous about what to use for bedding. I knew what I wanted the finished vermicompost to look like, but I didn’t understand how paper products could possibly help my red wiggler worms create this great compost. So… I spent time and money rounding up Coconut Coir to use as bedding for my composting worms. It certainly seemed to have the right “feel” I was aiming for in my finished compost.

Over time, I started to relax about… Continue

2 Worms in a Bin

Yesterday I started a new project entitled "2 Worms in a Bin".

My goal for this project is to ultimately have it "catch up" to my big bin.  I'd like to match the quantity of worms (I started at 1 lb and it's been 2 months so far, I'd say 1 lb of worms would be considered successful).

I will be blogging about all the details of the project at my blog, which is linked above.

Since I made the bin (more of a small…

Back for More Punishment I guess! LOL

it's been two years. I had given up. something always went wrong and killed my worms.  I've been aching to try again, but with life in the way I just couldn't. Now I have my own place and I'm ready to try again. Someone offered to give me some worms but I haven't heard back in months so that lead dried up. I don't work out of town anymore so I haven't been back to my favorite gas station/worm source. It seems like I'm going to have to order worms to get started again as I can't seem to find…

Number of Mites significantly reduced

I have had a pretty significant amount of mites in my worm bin the past few weeks.  I read in several places that they can be a good thing, so I am not worried about it.

Yesterday, I added some food to the bin.  It was a mixture of banana peels, grape tomatoes and apple cores.  I put it all in a blender and then added it, nice and mushy, to the bin.  I also crushed up an egg shell and sprinkled it on top, several hours after adding the food.

Right now, it's been over 24 hours…

Pumpkin Side Effect Alert

Whole pumpkin seeds added to the worm bins has attracted mice.

Maybe that's why the cat follows me to the bins all the time.

Rats,

been in hospital for almost 6 months

i've been in hospital for 6 months and all of my wormfarms are emptied by my wife (she didn't know how to manage the system) I have found about 400 red wigglers in my compostbins and put these back in the house, I hope they survive and prosper.

I'm also going to move to a place with a superb garden and enough place to put my indoor compostsystems.

So rest assured, I'm not dead yet and I'll start all over again.

greets,

wormengoeroe

Why bother with composting worms in Alaska? Let's do the math!

Sometimes people question me on why they should bother having composting worms in their home. It does not seem like a very big deal to keep a few kitchen scraps out of the landfill. Having composting worms adds one more chore to our already busy lives. Worms need to be fed, they need bedding added, and on occasion, they need their finished castings (aka poop or vermicompost) harvested.

With any new hobby or activity there is a learning curve. What seems difficult at first becomes second… Continue

Beneficial Microbe Soil Lab Report Back!

We just got back on our worm castings from a Dr. Elaine Ingram associated lab!

I can't cut and paste it from the report, but here are the results in written form:

Active Bacteria Range: Lo 3

Active Fungi Range: Lo 3-Hi 30, TWR's: 41.9

Protozoa: Numbers are off the chart in Flagellates, Amoebae and Ciliates! All are "above expected range"

Opinions please

I am a farmer of cattle and row crops. I have lots of screened manure from the cattle operation that we make compost out of using aerobic method, turning. Recently I read an article about a guy in New York who uses composted manure to feed his worms and then packaging or selling bulk the castings from the worms as a high value fertilizer. Is this a viable business? Does anybody know the nutrient profile of the worm droppings? Thanks for your advice. Mike
