First Cocoon!

I'm so excited! I just found my first cocoon. There have undoubtedly been many more cocoons before this one (I've had these worms since October) but I haven't seen any. It was about time to start harvesting some of the compost and giving the worms some nice clean, unpooped-on bedding so I was doing a little manual sorting when I happened upon a cute little brown cocoon. I was thinking about hatching it separately, just to see how many worms would come out but maybe I'll save that experiment for… Continue

School Program

My son, Dallas, is 5 years old and in Preschool this year. He loves my worms and tries to save everything for them. Sometimes I think he colors new pictures just so he can add more paper to our bin. Last… Continue

I got my first half kilo of worms

Thanks to my good friend Paolo I got my first half kilo of worms and started worm composting.

I used an old water basket to build the new home for the small red friends.

I did several hole in the bottom of the basket, then I layered shredded paper and cardboard for a couple of inches and some good soil. On the top of this bedding I put the worms with their compost.

Then I added vegetables and slices of pumpkin from my hort and a cover made of cardboard.

Form the moment,… Continue

2 liter soda bottle worm farms

About a month ago my classes started creating their own worm farms created out of 2 liter soda bottles. We are proud to announce that the first new worms have begun hatching from the cocoons. The kids are real excited and are now trying to devise an experiment for their farm. After they have completed the experiment they will have another group do the experiment to verify the results. They have already found out that our worms do not like a diet of just rye bread. We had a bout with fruit flies… Continue
