Vermicomposting, worm bin, composting with worms community and forums
I'm sure you've noticed that the forum hasn't been the same for a few days. As I understand it, Ning was trying to "upgrade" the RSS part of the site and instead succeeded in messing it up. As a bonus, they also wiped out our Recent Activity section.
So I'm starting this discussion/blog as a partial replacement. If you comment here, you should receive an email anytime another comment is added. Unfortunately, if this goes on for very long, you'll also need to…Continue
Finally gettin around to writing this account of my first VC harvest experience (or maybe inexperience)... Have what is intended to be a stackable bin system, but went the bright light and scrape method this time to remove some plastic from the VC. Dumped the contents of our paper shredder into the bin against the advice of my wife who stated there was a couple credit cards in it. Turns out it must have been a couple months of credit cards and grrrrrr, AARP cards. (between ATT & AARP, no…Continue
A fellow member and I have been talking about UCG, and they gave me permission to share the contents of our conversation in a blog post. The thought is that some of this info may be helpful to other readers here. So here it is. Remember, this is just how I use UCG with regards to how I compost it and/or feed it to the worms. Your results may vary. Good luck.
Question posted to me:
"When your mixing UCG & Scraps, what kind of ratio do you use...? How…Continue
Started gardening and looking for a local sorce of worms. Found someone near me on this site that says they can be contacted. Great! I want to do so. But when I try, after already responding to the email thing, it now says I must create a profile in the community section. I look at the menu on top of page and there is no link to a community page to set up a profile so I can contact this other person. (Eg. provide a page so people can find out more about you and/or contact you.. please…Continue
Greetings from the Urban Worm farm! We’re your worm farmers, Ash, Zach, Rachael and Hayley.…Continue
Well I figured after about a month it was time to share with the world my vermiculture experience. I started out building a bin out of a rubbermaid tote based roughly on a design I had seen at the Mother Earth News Fair in mid-August. I drilled some holes in the lower sides large enough for some 3/4" PVC pipe to fit through each about 1/3…Continue

The past three day's have been the hardest for me since I started with my EH's a little over a month ago .Over the weekend here in my part of N.C. the weather dropped into the 40's at night and didn't get out of the 50's until today. My Euro's seemed lifeless on Sunday and I decided to move them inside of my house until I can get them into their permanent home ( The Worm Drop Inn ) . Monday I moved them out of the 55 Gal. blue barrel I was keeping them in to a 18 Gal RM bin. I prepared the…Continue
Hello All: Started with a few worms in July and have been adding more red wigglers and Europeans - worms doing very well in compost from the organic gardens and horse manure. Looking to find a source of Indian Blues which are quite large and reproduce much faster. Raising the worms in large boxes in the cellar and they are doing very well. Started feeding worms to the fingerlings and they don't want to eat any more commercial catfish food! Guess that's like the difference…Continue
Not exactly sure what my page being "featured" is, but I am honored (I think) to have been featured. Judging by posts afterwards it seems that featured = discovery of a virus spread by looking at or posting comments on a page. [winks - just kidding :)] Will post a blog soon on memoirs of my first harvest. Busy time around here now but will be back in touch soon.
Did want to share something I do to save up worm food for the coming winter. I have…Continue

So about 13 days ago, I went to sprout what appeared to be unlabeled wheat seed that I planned to grow wheatgrass in some worm tea, and realized after a few hours of soaking that they were barley food grain instead. So I threw them into my worm bin, assuming that even IF they grew, the lack of light would stop their growth and they'd just rot like the carrot and celery ends that tend to sprout in the bin. 13 days later I checked on that bin and found that the barley is STILL alive and…Continue
Today I was checking my 55 gallon blue barrel that house my EH's and low and behold there where Pill Bugs and BSF larve under my shredded newspaper. I'm still a tenderfoot to VC and I was a little stumped on the larve at first becauseI haven't seen ant BSF's in or around the barrel which I keep covered and fairly moist all the time. I'm wondering if I should be overly concerned or just go with the flow with the Isopods and BSF larve or nip them in the bud now ?
So it's been just over a year since I got my first bin going. I'm using a rectangular plastic thing that I drilled holes in for air and drainage. It sits elevated in a second plastic thing. Every now and then I take the juice that's accumulated in the bottom and toss it on some plants. I might go to something a little more exotic and high tech, but not for a while.
I'm just getting ready for my third big harvest. I…Continue
Shalom (hello, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness,) all!
Been a while since I posted, but here I is now for a short inquiring write. Started the arduous process of harvesting my 135 days old (19 wks, 2 days) bin. Here for a lunch break and was wondering if there is a limit on how much can be written in a blog. As a normally shy type of guy, I do not have RJS (ratchet jaw syndrome) when in conversation, but when writing is a whole different…Continue

Today, I started cleaning out a old chicken coop to convert to a worm coop. I told a friend of mine I was going to call it The Worm Drop Inn. I plan on moving all my worms inside before the first frost get's here later this month. I'll be insulating the coop…Continue
