Worms & Roots

I don't recall if it was here, but I recently read someone claiming as if it was a well known fact that worms eat roots, like a pest will and damage plants. By my bin observations, this is a load of castings. Whenever a carrot end sprouts, my worms leave it alone until it rots. The forest of barley I accidentally grew was totally healthy and bursting with vitality, aside from being white from lack of light. There were tons of worms wriggling through the roots causing no harm to the… Continue

Barley Pros and Cons

The other day I threw in some uncooked barley into my bin. Today I found the whole lot sprouted to 4-5". So I pulled it up and buried the sprouts to help them rot (hopefully).

So while it was unexpected, I quickly noticed some benefits. The barley really oxygenated my bin well as it was getting a bit wet. The squirm seemed to be eating or otherwise enjoying the root mass. Plus, once the sprouts begin to rot, that is going to be a lot of food for them, which I will be adding some to… Continue

A Small Worm Bin

I was browsing the pet store this weekend and decided to buy a 10 gallon aquarium for $10. It isn't really an ideal container for a worm bin (heavy, fragile & not opaque), but it's excellent for a show-and-tell or observation bin.

First, I'm going to cover all 4 sides of the aquarium with cardboard sheets.…

First Bin Set Up

First a little background. I have been composting and gardening for about 28 years now. I am also a professional Chef by trade. A few years ago when I was in culinary school, the school had a garden and a friend introduced me to his worms (and by that I mean red wigglers,,haha).

So jump ahead a few years and I come across Bentley and www.redwormcomposting.com(great site and a great guy, with a great sense of humor). And now I am back into…

The Great Worm Experiment - Month 3

Not much to report this month. I haven't had a lot of time to play with my little friends since I took a job as a proofreader for a company that converts magazines to e-reader format and had to make drastic changes to my schedule. (Drastic, for me, is changing my sleep schedule from waking up around 9:00 a.m. and puttering around the house between homeschooling lessons and working on freelance writing to getting up before 6:00 a.m. to get shower, dress and leave the house by 7:15 to beat…
