updates, corrections and reflections

Hello fellow vermi-peeps!

I'm thankful we don't hafta be rocket scientists (though may be helpful with calculations) to be a successful vermi grower or dabbler whichever may apply. Was lookin at previous posts on my page and noticed an update I left on Aug. 4th. Reported it had been 93 days since startin my bin. Said to self "hmm, that don't look right", so instead of trying to use my 20 fingers and toes for the calculator as before, found this handy-dandy day counter…

Repopulating your Worms

I have been neglecting my bins alot here lately.  I am not alone here but i have picked up on things in the past week.  I have worked with worms for years and i am trying to build up my stock in a short amount of time.  I have a few ways to grow them faster, but i was wondering if anyone had suggestions.  I am open to all suggestions from anybody.

Thanks,

Ryan

Vermicomposting and Heavy Metals

I found this article  on Treehugger.  I love that the University's name is Pondicherry, like on Willy Wonka.

feeding Purina worm chow and grains vs. horse manure

as i have mentioned in other post the results i have had with feeding straight horse manure versus, feeding precomposted produce, leaves, and cardboard have been disappointing. the worms are smaller and not as fertile.

so i have decided to set up a new tote which will be fed exclusively on Purina Worm Chow and paper products.

i removed the top 3 inches of an identical established bin's contents which included probably two pounds of worms and left the bottom 4 inches of mucky…

55 Gallon Flow Through Bin Project

This will be my second flow through bin made from a 55 gallon plastic barrel.

Background:

The first bin I made has been going for close to 3 years now and can process in excess of 10-15lbs of food and bedding weekly.  It was constructed from a 55 gallon plastic barrel with the bottom grate made from steel electric fencing posts. On top of the posts I placed a old cooking rack which was attached to 2 cables which I had planned to used to shred the vermicompost off…

My Goal

I am hoping that with some planning hard work and the help of worm compost my raised veggie and herb garden can look like these wonderful garden creations next year!  I get really motivated looking at great pictures of others gardens.…

New recruit

Just wandered on to this site.  Pretty neat to have a place dedicated to the chit chat of just composting and nothing political or pop culture!    I've been composting for at least 15 years now with worms and find it to be a very fun hobby. I wouldn't even want to start my garden if I didn't have some fresh worm casting to put in it.. Once you've seen the results you can't go back to just plain old soil.    Well that's all for tonight.  Its a Friday night.. I need to get a life …

My wooden worm bin

Hi guys!

Well, before I started with my worm factory, I had this wooden bin with a few worms. None of them were mature yet.

I started out with newspapers in 1 corner of the bin.

When the worms in there become mature, I transfer them to my Worm Factory. Which only has mature worms in it. And the…

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply Andrew I'll look that list over for someone close to AZ. I still have my doubts about shipping from to far away.. It gets incredibility hot in the back of a postal truck around here!. (my mother use to be a carrier)

Question.

The reason I finally signed up to this forum was to ask:

Does anyone know of any local worm suppliers in the state of AZ?  I got my last batch from my local bait shop he ordered me alot of Red Worms but he said his supplier won't ship them this time of year..  I 've looked on the internet but everything is from pretty far away and I have concerns about shipping live worms from thousand of miles away in the August heat!

Thanks!

New!

I'm new here but have been reading for awhile.

My composter (Worm Factory 360) has been up and running for several weeks now and has been producing pretty well.  I've been getting a cup or so of compost out of the bottom tray every few weeks and adding it to my house plants.

They actually do seem more alive.  I have plans to expand but I don't know if I even could ever…
