Cooling Weather

Well it is the first of September and the weather is finally starting to cool off here in AZ.

I have taken the cooling system off line to see how the worms do. With the increased humidity I am getting much more worm lechate.
I hope that everyone else is doing well.
The worms seem to be doing well and are on auto pilot so there is not much to report.

How things have changed

My how things change. I remember just a few short years ago I was coveting my neighbors extra garbage can. Mine would over flow and I thought how great that they have two curbside cans. Now I covet my neighbors leaves and lawn clippings. They leave them out in clear plastic bags for the city compost, and I think If I weren't moving I'd grab that for my compost! Now days my garbage can goes out half full, some weeks I forget and it just doesn't matter, it'll wait till the next week and still not… Continue

Wake 'em up.

I've tried not to disturb the worms too much over the past few days but curiosity got the better of me today. I wanted to make sure they have an environment that is not going to harm them. The more I read about the do's and don'ts I began to worry that I may have some problems.Yesterday I pulled back the grass clippings and dug around the top couple of inches. I found a couple of worms that looked like they might be dead.but I wasn't seeing many of the worms and I thought the soil felt rather… Continue

The Worms Have Arrived.

Actually I went and picked them up as they were being harvested. One of the things I wanted to ask the worm farm is what they do to manage their worms in the winter time around here. Well, that was answered when I got directions to the farm. It is in an underground cave, one of the industrial sites where they've mined the limestone.

When I got back I put them in their new in their new home. It didn't take much time before they started diving below the surface. They were fun to watch.… Continue

BSF and Garden updates

I've added some pics to the BSF group.

Here's some recent garden pics.

The worm bin is buried and covered over w/ mulch in the back left corner.

I'm hoping this is a pumpkin, haven't seen any yet.

These are some green onions that… Continue

Finding my way around this site.

Trying to get everything set up in advance of the worm's arrival. I got the bedding rebuilt in a second tub after the swamp I created in the first tub.

I did post a topic in the forum yesterday at:

WWTAD - What Would the Amish Do

The grandsons are getting more interested in what I'm doing with the worms. My wife was teasing them saying that I was going to give them worms for… Continue

Waiting For The Harvest To Come In.

I ordered worms today, the company said they will be harvested in a week or so. I know the experts suggest setting up the worm habitat several days in advance to getting the worms but I wanted them now. Meanwhile I'm waiting. That's probably a good thing, it will give me time to clean up the swamp I created in their plastic tub last night. While learning everything I need to know on the Internet, I missed the step that said to soak the paper and cardboard "then wring the water out before… Continue

BSF Larvae

I'm pretty sure I introduced these by accident. I started w/ a pile of weeds when I dug out my garden. I noticed these in the soil and thought they were grubs. I eventually sifted the soil of of the weed pile and made some hot compost bins, those failed miserably and started to stink so I found out about and converted them to worm bins. I pulled these guys out when I found them, but there were alot. Against the rules, there is a fair amount of soil mixed into my bedding, the worms seem to have… Continue

I AM BACK!

HELLO EVERYONE!

I have been gone for the last two weeks on vacation.

As many of you know I live in AZ where the weather is HOT.

So I decided to put my worms in a boarding facility for the two weeks to keep them cool and comfortable.

They spent two weeks in an air conditioned 48" stainless steel dog kennel.

Today I go back and find out how they have done.

While I was on vacation I went fishing in MN and used some Canadian Night Crawlers. (Boy they are… Continue

coffee grounds

I drink only instant coffee. The other day I was in the coffee shop with a friend. I had remembered to bring a plastic shopping bag. I asked the clerk to fill it with coffee grounds and now I have a relliable source of grounds.

No tower topple

Well, the pile of worm bins continues to grow... with a few learning curves thrown in.

I can't imagine I would have continued without this forum! I started to encounter a few... uh... oddities along the way, but thankfully, I'd read about most of them and was able to work thru them quickly.

Including the appearance of MAGGOTS!!! in one of the bins. Now... MAGGOTS!!! are not something that I've come into contact much with in the course of my life... they kinda gross me out. Ok,… Continue

feeding the heard

With the recant discovery of red worms in the compost-o-matic the need for worm food has doubled. Today I feed the outside worms about a half-pound of flowers off of the Trumpet Vine.

I all ready have the lady across the street saving me kitchen scrapes but like us they are only a family of 2. So there is a limit of how many scrapes are going to come out of our combined kitchens. I probably should explore this avenue more.

I have thought about asking one of the local restaurants but… Continue

New Worm Bin

There are so many worms in my bin now that I need to start a 2nd one so that I can leave the first one to mature completely. I have been selling off 500g of worms at a time with each of the bins that we sold, but I can still spare some to start another bin.

We bought 2 Vegetable Racks on Saturday and Johnny and I converted them into a stacking worm bin last night. Bottom one with legs and a tap, others stacking on top with holes drilled in the base to allow worms through. These ones… Continue

Decorating

I moved a piece of drift wood I had in the yard, and got the sunflowers moved to their new home. The sunflowers seem to have recovered from the initial shock of getting moved. I also moved some lettuce from the garden to the straw bale. I have some seedlings inside that need to get added to the straw bale also, and some cauliflower will go behind, using the bale for shade.…

Still worming away!

Life outside of worm herding has kept me too busy to update my blog on a more current basis. My worms are seriously multiplying like crazy! I have 2 fully functioning worm bins and a 3rd psuedo-worm bin that's taking care of excess food. I also set up a compost pile for the non-worm friendly veg material but that's looking a bit sad since I lack the leaves for it right now. When the leaves all fall from the tress in a few months, the compost pile will look much better.

I've… Continue

Rehaul Imminent

All right. It seems I have to start anew. I'll start by getting me a bigger bin, then devising a drainage scheme, then selecting a container to freeze scraps in.

Today is Sunday, and I wasted the day cooking scrumptious things (rather than messing around with wormies), and so I don't know if I'll have time to do this soon...

But I should--and I know it. There is no unbearable stink now, but I have a terrible feeling that it might start to if I don't take action. So, I will… Continue

I need drainage!

It's been too long.

I've slowly come to the realization that if I wait to update my little blue bin any longer, my worms will either drown or suffocate. This will not do.

With three roommates, making sure the wormbin is healthy and stink-free is of the utmost importance. Right now, there is an ominous odor of sulfur emanating from the little box. It's time to invest in a new bin, one that can handle all the scraps we generate and that I can drill holes in the bottom of without… Continue
