Rabbit Manure Update

It's time for an update on my 3 x 2 outside worm bin with rabbit manure bedding.

I've had the bin going a couple of months at this point. For those that haven't been following along, I started with 50 lbs of worm manure, about 10 lbs of torn cardboard "squares", a whole bunch of shredded newspaper and a couple pounds of food scraps. A few days ago I added 5 lbs of coffee grounds.

Some have said and will say that rabbit manure alone as bedding and…

Alot of Garbage

I have some worms, I really do not know how many. I could take a guess somewhere between 100 to 200 worms. "not sure". I have been composting since Feb. I am fairly new to composting. I have seen some worm casting and let me tell you it looks cool. I wanted to see how much food my worms can take.

I have a small plastic bin. I put 3 plantain peels, 1 full plantain, some mango peels, and some potatoe peels. Not to bore but I put…

combo bin

i decided to combine my food scraps bin and my main bin. after my mom discovered the fruit fly infestation in my food scrap bin, i have not been allowed to add to it until the small amount of worms in there had processed it. so instead of waiting for eons of time for that to happen, i dumped my main bin into it, which has about 3 pounds of worms in it. i think most of the stuff in that bin was almost done, just chunks of cardboard except for recent feeds. i had been hoping that they would…

They are here

So, I recieved my worms and was glad to find that between when I ordered them and the person I ordered them from they arrived on the warmest day of the year (so far) and so they seem to be in good condition.

I will post pictures in a while. Right now they are burrowing into their new home. So, I am starting with one pound of worms. I have a feeling that I am going to be building up food for them because, I have about one pound of food already rotting in their bag however,…

Happy Saint Patrick's Day 2010

On my way home from a work visit, I stopped at a gas station to use their restroom. As I stood inside the door waiting to ask permission and directions, I saw through the door a paper sign with pictures of bugs. It said live crickets. I wondered, then I saw "smrow" on the sign. I rushed back outside and sure enough the sign said they had "WORMS". I'm sure the clerk thought i was batty when I ask where was the bathroom and where were the worms!

I got a small container of red worms in… Continue

The Worms are Coming...the Worms are Coming

Okay,

So I got an e-mail today telling me that my worms are on their way and should be here by Wednesday or Thursday. :)

I am so excited. My bag which has some bedding and food in it has been rotting in my garage for a couple of weeks now and I am getting a hang of how much water I need to be adding. I am surprised by how earthy it smells. I did have one day of concern, I have a plastic tub on my counter that I can put my scraps into as I cook…

My worms are in trouble!

Does anyone have an idea why my worm's backsides are turning pale? I think my bin might be too dry.

2nd tray!!

I added my first tray to my worm factory yesterday (total of two now) and everything seems to be going well. I put a 50/50 mix of wintered over shredded leaves (quite wet from having 20 inches of snow melt over the top of them), and my shredded paper/cardboard mix that I've been building up in the basement. I warmed up some water and wet the paper/cardboard, also warming up the leaves that were outside in 45 degree weather. Then I just took the fairly well rotted sheet of newspaper that I… Continue

Use Worm Castings for Spring Planting

Test Earth Box / Global Bucket

I started up a test on my homemade Earth Box today.

It is a Catnip plant in a 2 gallon DIY Earth Box bucket. I thought i would share how i made it. Just in case anyone is interested.

You don't have to watch the videos. But, you will probably understand 'why' i did things better if you do watch the videos. Just in case you want to see them.

Wood Worm Bin how-to and plans

OK, folks, bear with me. I know how to do this stuff, but I can't promise I will use the proper names for tools, so feel free to ask if I am talking about something unfamiliar...

The basic concept: Use 2x4's to make a frame. Use a cut up piece of plywood to make the skin. ummmm...

Seriously though, I actually did not really reinvent the wheel here. I mostly followed the plans from the Washington State University… Continue

Oops!

Back mid September i harvested a 5 gallon tote of compost. I had removed a pound of worms out of the compost over two separate sifting's and was fairly confident that i had gotten most of the worms.... Then let the bin set in a corner over winter, waiting for spring.

Well last night i decided to get out some compost to add into a planting mix, to start some early seedlings. I'm getting ready, as it looks like we are going to have an early spring this year. So i brought out my 5 gallon… Continue
