I would say fat worms indicates that the conditions are favorable so they they are not stressed out and would be more likely to eat more and reproduce more.
Susan is right. Not very many worms try to escape except when I open the lid to feed them. Plus I have two cats and anything resembling wiggling yarn does not have much chance getting to the top of the bed.

It is my birthday today and my 4 year old daughter came up to me and asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told her I wanted 5 pounds of worms. She said that was not really a present. I thought she would say they are gross but she then asked how would she wrap them. Thanks, I've improved my worm salad recipe since that photo was taken. It now gets mixed with peat moss (I would prefer to use coir) seasoned with ground eggshells, a sprinkle of sand, and tossed with hand shredded cardboard.
