Hello there, I am new to this group and 6 months into worm composting. I am having trouble ordering worms and knowing where to get them in Ontario. Any ideas for me? Thanks
I love to compost and have been doing so for sometime. I started with worms indoors because I found out you could actually do this. I was looking for a way to rid leftovers in the winter and I found it. I am always taking scraps from family and homes I clean , bringing a bucket with me. I hate to see it go into the garbage. I use to raise finches, canaries. I was always giving them my egg shells, scrap veg. I am a gardener. I am also a Christain and lead Jr youth to a full knowledge of Jesus Christ. I love to go green and can spend hours looking up different ways to do this.

Teresa, Protein poisoning comes from food that is not processed or broken down enough for the worms before they consume it. Certain foods will take longer to break down and will create a sour bed before the worms can consume it. Over feeding can exacerbate this situation. Make sure your food stock is in small pieces and that you are not adding too much at one time. Make sure there is plenty of air as this is necessary for a healthy bin. You may want to prepare a new bin with fresh bedding (I recommend well composted manure - not store bought) and move your healthy worms to this new bin. Give them a few days to settle in and then start feeding small amounts of chopped up food waste. I have one contact that swears by pumpkin puree (not pie pumpkin). Better to under feed than over feed. Remember that the bedding if food stock also, so there is always food for the worms. Make sure there is enough moisture in the bedding to squeeze a drop or two and make sure you have air holes in your bin bottom, sides and top. Keep the bin elevated to air can get to the bottom of the bin.
If you have more information on your particular set up I might be able to give you more specific answers to your problem.
There is a great thread here that might give you some food for thought as well -
I'm not in Canada but everyone has good things to say about getting worms form Bentley RedWormComposting. He is in Ontario too.
A lot of worm company wont ship worms in very hot weather or very cold weather. They cant guarantee live delivery. Who know you may be able to work something out.
Welcome to the group, Teresa. Bentley is a fellow member here and is based in Ontario. Below are links to his Canadian website & his blog. I've not bought from him personally, but comments from other members here who have bought from him have been positive. Worm Composting Canada Bentley's blog
