Martha Stewart had a short segment on vermicomposting, but she didn't sound to excited about it. Oprah would get the info out there a lot further.
I know Bentley puts bedding like shredded newspaper in with his veges to 'age' before putting them in the smaller bins. (He says he doesn't need to worry about the really big ones.) Having the bedding mixed in cuts down on the small a whole lot.
Here's something else I've found helpful from the Manual.
To maximize reproduction, Initial stocking densities greater than 2.5 kg/m2 (0.5 lb/ft2) but not more than 5
kg/m2 (1.0 lb/ft2).

There's always some mould in bins, even if we can't see it. I agree with Kim that it might not get out of the bin since it's so moist there, but I think the only way to tell would be to have Lynn get a good sniff of a working bin.

Can you tell us what it's for? I'm assuming it's more than just a box with a pointed bottom (which is all I can see.) I'm not sure what's meant by 'speedy breeder'. What's this got that a plastic tote doesn't?
From what I've read in the past, some folks have been vermicomposting for more than 10 years. (One, I think, said 20 years). They probably aren't checking this site out as regularly as us newbies. I started in Dec of 2007, shortly before this site...
Thanks for reviving this old discussion. It sounds like a good harvesting method for small quantities of compost, which is what I eventually will be trying. Any updates from those using this method since June '08?

Mini Flow Through Bins
Well, I've finally joined the late 20th century and gotten a digital camera. I've had really good experience with my flow through bins and wanted to share them with you. I'm single and live in a 20th floor studio apartment, so I couldn't do the big outside garbage can with wheels. I got 2 tall kitchen trash cans (about 9 months apart.) The mini flow through seems to be doing well, but I need to add more worms as others suggested. Do you think it would too many if I ordered another pound and put them in? Currently I'll bet I only have about 100 or so worms total in that bin.

how is your experience with feeding mango peels to the worms? I have cut the peels to about 1/8 x 1" pieces and froze them before feeding to the worms. However, mango peels take a very long time to break down in my bins.

I have read the entries in your blog and saw your pictures. I set up my FT 10 days ago so I havent harvested yet.
Have you seen those L support for shelves? They come in different sizes and I was going to make something using those for harvesting. They are powder coated (baked paint) metal and the reason I like those is because the ends/tips are rounded. The metal gets wider the closer it gets to the "knick/fold" to form the L.
Depending how this FT bin is going, I have 2 more 96 gal. carts I could convert into worm bins. Got them from craigs lsit. I guess I really got carried away. DH & DS don't know I have those bins because I sort of "hide" them at the side of the house and nobody goes there except me to clean the needles from the neighbour's tree.

Mark Shaw said… - Hi Susan, I made them at home we sell the big one 2400mm x 1200mm to Golf Courses, resturants etc the small one 1200 x 600 is great for home as it will hold +50 000 worms. The bottom shape helps catch the worm tee.
