===========================================

I "discovered" worm composting in spring of 2008 and have been fascinated by it every since. Since I couldn't find anyone I personally knew who composted with worms nor did my friends have much interest in hearing about them.. i got really curious if there were any other vermicomposters "out there" in the world so I set up the vermicomposters map and this community to try to find out. Through working on this website I've met so many great people.. it has really been a great experience. Thanks! Please let me know if you have any suggestions about how to continue to spread the word about vermicomposting.

Continuous flow liner experiment.

I'm still "recovering" from my Worm bin sludge situation I took all the sludge and put it in a bucket on its own and skimmed off any excess water every couple days until it wasn't flooded. After several weeks what was in the bucket started to dry out to the point that it looked like normal VC. Plus I could see lots of worm trails / turned VC where the worms that were still in there were working their magic. So,… Continue

Worm bin sludge situation

I looked in the bottom tray of my flow through worm bin a couple days ago and noticed there was a log of semi-solid material in the bottom tray and tons of worms. It seemed like they were living fine in that soup, but yesterday I decided to try to clean it up and get the worms back into the main tray.

This is what the bottom tray looked like while I was cleaning it out:…

Nightcrawlers from Bait to Bin

I tried to learn how to fish over Labor day weekend during a camping little camping trip at Clearlake State Park in California. After 2 days and about 6 hours of fishing I came up empty handed although my sister who was also just learning caught a 6 and a half pound catfish on her first cast!

In any case, the bait shop had set us up with a 2 dozen nightcrawlers and we only ended up using 6 of them.... leaving me with 18 leftover.... so I decided to toss them in a 1 quart plastic bin… Continue

Corn cob n' husk

It has been a couple days since I added my diced corn cob to my worm bin. I put them in the corner in case the worms didn't like them for some reason. When I checked it today lots of worms were hanging out in that corner so far so good.. although I suppose it will get much more interesting a couple weeks down the road when I can actually see if the cobs are being processed faster than they would if they… Continue

Good luck with adding the bread. My worms wouldn't eat it. The bread turned moldy and I had to take it out. However, I put it in dry - the moisture you added should help.

A great site you have started here.
I truly hope that it grows exponentionaly.
I have been buffering my coffee with a light dusting of calcium carbonate from cuttle fish shells.

I haven't read the Taylor book, and Appelhoff's book was so long ago that I've read, since, that some of her info is incorrect in light of further experience. I think I got most of my practical help from the magazine Worm Digest. Their first issue on homemade bins (Number 21, I think) was really my bible for the first year.
Your take on worm comfort is very interesting; I hadn't thought a lot about that, but am aware that they show discomfort in bright light, and now I'll be watching a lot closer to see what else I can learn about them.
By the way, I live only 50 miles from Mary Appelhoff's place in Kalamazoo.

Steven, If you don't already get the daily digest from the_worm_bin@yahoo.com, you should join up; I think you'll like the attitudes that these members show. And I think they should be glad to know of your site and your map!

Hello Mr. Chow
I hope that all is well in California.
I have a question.
I can no longer see the little tabs on the map that shows the locations of people.
Can you help?
Thanks,

Nathan J.

Hi Again Steven,

The map seems to be working properly now. Thanks for the fix. I have been enjoying your site. I was going to start my own site about worms a few months ago, but never had time. Now that I have found your site there is no need. Thanks......Woo

Thank you Steve for your information. I did check the link and I am going back later on to read more of the posts as they have a lot of good information.

By the way, thank you for starting this website. I hope it grows and grows. We will difinately be a playing a part of it. I am going to take pictures of setting up of our new worm factory and post the pictures. I have been wanting to do this for over 10 years and I am really excited about it.

Thank again,
Toby Adams
