I looked outside on the balcony where my Worm and BSFL bin are, and low and behold, I saw an adult BSF! I am not sure if it hatched from one of my BSFL, or was just attracted to the smell of the BIN. I hope it laid some eggs before it left! Given...
October 30
Well it looks like my BSFL are having a second wind. I opened the worm bin today and I saw a half loaf of bread I put in the bin earlier in the week teeming with BSFL. The weather warmed up more this week so that may have contributed. Interesting ...

Try adding some used coffee grounds or other food and see. Grubs begin to move toward dormancy at @65F bin-temperature, and any non-dormant larvae will die if frozen, but if the outside temperature was only briefly that cold and there were enough ...

They are still light colored.

Kevin, are your grubs still light colored or have they turned a dark coffee color? If they're still light, I wonder if you could put your bucket in the sun on a warm day and get them going again. Otherwise it sounds like they'll just pupate in the...

Well I just checked the BSFL bucket and the BSFL are clearly either dorment or dead. Most didn't move, a few moved very very little. Last night we reach close to 32 F so I guess the cold finally got to them. I did not have a large enough populatio...

I bought some European Night Crawlers from Vermitechnology.com. They arrived in the time they said they would and were healthy and packaged very well.

October Garden

I pulled out two tomato plants that were doing nothing. Hung one upside down in the garage and the other is in the compost. One is still in the garden, I trimmed lots of branches w/ no or small fruit. I want the remaining large tomatoes to ripen , I don't need any more to flower. I'm going to start wrapping it up at night w/ hot water bottles.

Started a second compost pile. The good thing about mowing OPBL is it leaves lots of OM on the lawn too! I dumped a few inches of leaves on top of the bi… Continue

Updates

Well my life in the Navy is even more in limbo than it was the last year. I'm ineligible to reenlist in my rate due to medical conditions, so I've submitted a force conversion package. I'll either get picked up for another rate or told to seperate. Maybe it's just me, but since medical conditions incurred on duty have prevented me from doing the job I was trained for, I was expecting a medical separation, but no I have 7-10 days to reenlist or separate and can't reenlist. So I'm applying for a 3… Continue

How things have changed

My how things change. I remember just a few short years ago I was coveting my neighbors extra garbage can. Mine would over flow and I thought how great that they have two curbside cans. Now I covet my neighbors leaves and lawn clippings. They leave them out in clear plastic bags for the city compost, and I think If I weren't moving I'd grab that for my compost! Now days my garbage can goes out half full, some weeks I forget and it just doesn't matter, it'll wait till the next week and still not… Continue

BSF Larvae

I'm pretty sure I introduced these by accident. I started w/ a pile of weeds when I dug out my garden. I noticed these in the soil and thought they were grubs. I eventually sifted the soil of of the weed pile and made some hot compost bins, those failed miserably and started to stink so I found out about and converted them to worm bins. I pulled these guys out when I found them, but there were alot. Against the rules, there is a fair amount of soil mixed into my bedding, the worms seem to have a… Continue

Hi RJ. I've been working on the wormwiki. My question is about the 'how to set up a bin' page. You added links to the boreal wormer (GREAT IDEA!), and you also added a page 'flow through rubbermaid bin'. I'm not sure what you mean by that. I've added bits and pieces to all of the other links. I hope you don't mind! :-)

Thanks RJ! The community worm sharing attitude of this verimcomposting network is certainly rubbing off on me.

Not sure what you mean by trading gd communities, but it sounds interesting. :)
No I have not been able to download concerts. I'm not sure how to use bit torrents. But I have seen them in that format.
Went to a Micky Hart concert a few weeks ago they said it would be available on the net.
Do you know anything about that kind of stuff?
