Our visitors are always amazed when I show them the worm bin. They expect a lot of bad smells, but of course there aren't any.

I found my first escapee this morning. S/he was about 8 ft away from the bin, all dry and wiggling with regret. Five months with only one getting out is not that bad. Especially since we get them out a lot and we could have actually left it out ou...

I have a recyclable fruit fly trap video posted here on the site or you can go to youtube.com and search fruit fly traps and see numerous videos on how to make some including mine. Burying the food better works the best.

I really believe that people smell more with their eyes than their nose. If you have compost in plain sight they will notice it but if it is hidden they have no idea.

now that's funny.

We just remodeled our spare beadroom and this weekend we had a family party. My wife kept taking people on tours and no one even noticed the 3 bins of worms with about 5 lbs of red wigglers. (not even my wife who does not know they are there)

Do what Laurel says, and: Add nematodes to your bin--they feast on fruit fly larvae. Stop adding any citrus peels--bananas, oranges, etc. Fruit fly eggs in the peels. This regimen has eradicated the fruit fly issue for us.

1st to escape!

I found my first escapee this morning. S/he was about 8 ft away from the bin, all dry and wiggling with regret. Five months with only one getting out is not that bad. Especially since we get them out a lot and we could have actually left it out ourselves. The babies are so small, I'm never sure that I have gotten all of them back in. I'm just thankful I'm the one who found it!

STEALTH

My mother-in-law just spent 4 days with us and never noticed the worm bin! I can't believe it... As my friend Amy says, those worms are "STEALTH"

June 8, about 5 weeks in, fruit flies

fruit flies. yuck. How do I get rid of them? Everything after the initial feeding of the bin, before the worms arrived, has been frozen and thawed to kill fruit fly larvae, or so I thought.

Thanks in advance for your help in this matter. :)

The bin is full of egg sacks and we even found 2 worms mating today. They were connected all afternoon! I finally put them back in the bin where they could be more comfortable than in our bug viewing container. Worm love is in the air!

day 27

Hank was playing with his rocks tonight and decided he wanted to give one to the worms. I'm amazed at how different they look from each other. Tonight the ones we got out were very red, and the section that's different was a deeper red rather than a lighter red like it usually is. Could it been what they're eating?

We had an exciting worm race. See pictures tagged day 27.
