Is the heating cable on the OSCR necessary in Florida do you think? We get freezing temps, but never past morning when the sun comes up. Michael, I might look ya up when the time comes :-)
Another question that I just thought of. Where is a good place to obtain 16lbs of worms without paying out my month's salary to do it? Andrewthio posted this link to me: http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~compost/methods.html and a vermatopia sounds per...
Hey Jupiter thanks for the link! That looks very promising, in a quick browse of the site, I didn't find anything about worm composting though, did I miss a section?? Definitely interested in incorporating this into the mix!
Hey guys, looking forward to learning a lot. I'm tossing around the idea of starting a larger scale worm bed at the school where I teach at to process the lunchroom waste. Any ideas on where to begin? Seems like a fairly large leap from my 18 gall...
A group for outdoor vermicomposters. Those who keep their bins, pots or containers outside or have in-ground or above-ground worm houses, exposed to the elements.
Hey there I'm Mickey, I'm in Tallahassee, FL. Just recently got into worm composting. I'm interested in developing a larger scale bin for the school that I teach at to manage the cafeteria waste. Any ideas, directions anyone can give, or resources...
Do you live in: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, or South Carolina?
Then you're welcome. Share your knowledge on how you've beat the heat!
Have a Rubbermaid 18 gallon bin right now, thinking of doing a large outdoor "bin" though.
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
3-4lbs
About Me:
I teach students who are visually impaired. Worm composting and vegetable gardening has been a great way to introduce them to many skills they've been lacking. I'm now interested in "capturing" all the green waste, and the cardboard that our school generates every week. We'll see how that goes, hope to find information here that will lead me in that direction.
Hi Mickey, Although I haven"t posted much to this site which I am a member, your profession caught my attention. I am a care giver to four quadrapelegic men who are medically fragile. I am a organic gardener who raises vegetables in raised beds. I used strictly worm castings this last season as fertilizer in my beds and I am hooked on worm poop now. My results were tremendous in numbers of fruit set and the flavor of my tomatoes was outstanding. You might say I'm a worm poop convert! It's nice to make your aquaintance . Talk to you later. divotfiller
Mickey, welcome to the group! Great idea to get students involved with recycling and gardening. Here's one of the larger worm setups. Click on the "plans" link to see a list of materials. http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~compost/methods.html
