I always froze my scraps before I fed them as I heard it killed any fly eggs that had been laid on the fruit/veg peelings. Never had trouble with them until I moved my worms outside. Good luck!

Mine is always pretty muddy too so I'll be interested in other people's answers! I just let mine air-dry for a few days before I use it.

My store-bought bin has a lid. I covered my homemade bin with a vinyl tablecloth. I had it vinyl side down and draped over the bin. It worked great!

I feed one full gallon-sized ziplock per week but I don't know how much it weighs. I started with 2 lbs of worms a year ago so I'm sure I have a lot more now.

If your bin is too wet I'd definitely add some more dry bedding material. I don't know why that would keep the worms from migrating. I'm assuming your top bin has plenty of holes for the worms to move through. If there is easy access and food and ...

Euros Arrived!

Woohoo! The two pounds of European Nightcrawlers I ordered from Bentley arrived today. Packed into a box in Kentucky and released into bins in west Texas, I wonder if they feel shanghaied?! I have been working all week getting their new open bins ready and tweaking them. I messed with the bins so much that I felt like I was readying a guest room for highly anticipated company!

The worms all seemed healthy and active and, when I spread them across the top of the two open bins, they quickly start… Continue

A New Experiment in Vermicomposting

A longer and more basic post on this subject appears on my blog at SimplyForties

I was recently reading about Bentley Christie's winter worm bin/planter experiment, was intrigued and decided to try it myself.

Hi, Mary:

It was good to see your blog update after your worms arrived. How are they doing? When I brought mine home for the first time, I felt like a nervous new mother for a good week, and didn't really get comfortable for another week or two, so I understand what you mean about getting things ready for your new guests!

Mary, Gene here. Have you had your Euros long enough to make a comparison to the EFs? Are you keeping them separate? I also got the Worm Factory and am doing as Bently suggests about letting it 'ripen', my worms will be shipped today. My wife is not all that keen on having the bin in the kitchen. I also have the high heat problem and am thinking the excess Euros may be able to adapt to well mulched flower beds. Any thoughts? Gene
