It probably has to do with what has been fed to the bin. I would spread crushed egg shells in there and maybe some new bedding @ the top that way they can move on up to cleaner bedding if they need to get away from a toxic environment.
I agree with Catherine Daly and say it is a different type of worm as their are many different kinds in your soil. My EH cocoons are much larger than the EF's for sure but it all depends on what is in your soil and wondered into the compost bin.

Love to see the creativity of some vermicomposting folks here. Gives me some ideas I need to use to streamline my processes
You will indeed attract worms but in my experience they wont nessessarily thrive in indoor bins. some will some wont. It is a very slow process though to get enough of a mass of them
I currently have many Ikea boxes of the size 1.2 feet by 8 inches and only 6 inches deep. since my bedding is never more than 5 inches and I only keep a loose plastic on top there are no problems as excess moisture evaporates and I could always remo…
Michael's the craft store has great plastic strong mesh in the cross stich isle comes in 2 sizes. I buy mine here in Canada for 69 cents and it's about 14 inches by 8 inches. I am going to be using these to make up hand sifters. As time progressed t…
sounds like since you started your bin off right that you would have a good level of proper bacterial action so yes you can feed if you see that the former food placed in there is pretty much gone. Do the pocket feed method and allow the worms to ea…
I am using the stacked bin system. Similar to what is in their picture on the equipment page. I bought cheap Resin shelves (from Costco in Canada) for $30 each that can handle up to 600 pounds of weight or 30 bins @ 1-1.5 lbs of worms each and then…
I think the answer is a bin that has clear sides that you can just lift a side and have view of the window. That way the worms will be in the dark other than the occasional time that the "drape" gets pulled so you can view them from a side. I have b…
Anisten,
when you harvested you bin, was it dry in the center? The bin I am making is 40 inches by 40 inches and 24 inches deep. I won't be starting it up for a few weeks so, at this point I can still add a pipe in the center to water it or is that over doing it?
Above the harvest chamber, I used steel cable spaced about 1 inch. The cable has some give and I was going to use a hand rake to harvest.
