Just popped by and happened to catch this thread! Catherine has me beat - I am now closing in on a decade, but it was technically early in 2000 when a co-worker (at the enviro consulting firm where I was working at the time) sent me home with a buck…

From what I've read in the past, some folks have been vermicomposting for more than 10 years. (One, I think, said 20 years). They probably aren't checking this site out as regularly as us newbies. I started in Dec of 2007, shortly before this site s…

A couple of years. It's super relaxing to sit out with the worms and enjoy a pipe.

getting ready for a one year anniversary--December of 2008. It just started to help my organic garden addiction, and now it is a full blown business.

I've been at it in one way or another since 1999!! Bought a huge big composter with gravel drainage at the bottom, and a door just above that to harvest from. It took years to get to a level worth harvesting, although I did scrape some vermicompost…

I've put stale tortillas, bread and rice in my bin. Like everyone has said, just be careful to use small quantities and make sure the worms have somewhere to escape too if it gets too warm for them.

Sounds like another good ingredient to help keep worms warm in the winter. Rice, bread, cornmeal...all in moderation. How about oatmeal?
October 26
When I found out what cornmeal could do, I thought I had discovered some kind of new heat energy. LOL Thank God I hadn't put that much in my worm box.

I started in 2003, but took a break in 2005 for about four years. Happy to be back.

4 Huge rubbermaid Bins Hi Lizette, how huge are they? The label on mine says 24x36x8.75", the usable area is less than that. My set-up is following Jason''s. I have 1 catch tray and 3 bins on top of that. They are all working trays because I was to…

My garden gets 40 kg of grounds a week and they're still there.I've got two huge lemon trees so I'm thinking since the worms don't like the dropped fruit I'll stuff that down the "hole" of the mole(haha). Will let you know about the moles.

Hallo there How do I chase moles out of my herb garden??
September 28
We have tons of moles in our yard...but I really don't know a humane way to get rid of them. Except moles travel close to the surface so you could put up some sort of barrier method around your garden. That would keep them out (or so I am told) Good…

It's taken me a year but I've got clever worms!!

I was very excited about celebrating 1 year of having worms and was just starting to think I've got the hang of things when they brought me to my knees with a great big bang.Since I've moved my bins outside into a shady spot in my vegetable garden I've really seen their numbers increase drastically and I can only attribute that to only checking in on them twice a week...Yes it is possible! But last week something extra-ordinary happened.I got up from my computer after visiting the website gigglin… Continue

How to solve a problem like....MOLE??

I know this forum is about earthworms but since moles eat our garden variety of earthworm I thought it is a valid question for this forum.I have a mole that is distroying my garden and I would like to know if anybody has any clever, humane and organical method of getting rid of it.Or should I just let it be?

Coffee Grounds as Mulch??

Hi,I have posted this on another organical gardening site but you guys are so knowledgable I thought I'll ask here as well.I have access to a lot of used grounds from my clients, too much for my worms and I feel silly to just dump it into my regular compost heap,is there any harm in using it as mulch around the garden?(Besides smelling like a coffeeshop)Surely there is bound to be something positive about it?

The" greenest" way of getting rid of Fruitflies.

Hi, I moved my bins outside about a month ago and today I discovered about 6 Geckos and Lizzards hanging around or inside my bins just munching away at fruitflies(Or I suppose that's why they were in the neighbourhood.)Now I just have to hide them from the chickens!Plus I discovered some mushrooms AND loads of worms in a bin I thought I 've harvested all of the worms .I'm one very contented worm-mama tonight!!

Hi Lizette - welcome to Vermicomposters! Your mention of Baviaanskloof brings back very fond memories of a recent trip there. I am sure that your worms will multiply rapidly with all the wonderful food you will be giving them. I only feed mine scraps from me and my husband and they multiply enough that we can sell bins at the rate of 1 per month and stock them with about 1000 worms each.

Don't worry, given time and good conditions a worm farm can take care of any amount of waste. In your case you might need to hire a 'worm rancher' when you get to that point...

Good luck w/ the worms and the business!
