If there is anyone who would like to have instructions on how to create the soda bottle worm farms I have burned a CD of the power point my students created. It is a huge file and my school computer will not let me down load it. So I would be will...

Oooh, Susan, I'm with you on fruit flies -- they annoy me so much! And that's a great idea to put bedding in the very bottom, I am totally doing that.

I'm with you. More is better, especially since buying 5 is less than buying 3 and then buying more trays later. Also, I'm enjoying it enough that I'm thinking about setting up a second WF eventually. If it turns out I don't need 5 trays I can buy ...

Big congrats. She'll get more and more used to it, slowly. I double she'll ever help you feed the bin. She might help you get worms out of the harvest the 3rd or 4th time she sees you do it. Be sure it's really well composted before you harvest, t...

Good news all the way around Laruel. A lot of folks put a weed cloth or any kind of cloth ( old T shirt ) between the catch tray and the bottom working tray. Liquid drips through and the worms stay in the bin. On the bug front, most bugs have a v...

Laurel, that's all great news, I'm so glad for you! :) I now have a lot of tiny black beetles crawling around energetically with the worms right in the food deposits in my bin in the kitchen. They don't seem to be hurting anything or trying to es...

May 1, 2008
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?

Bunny poop, any kind of fruit scraps.

I think Eisenia fetida.

Right now a Rubbermaid tub with air holes. I'd like to upgrade to something fancier someday.

Not much, I'd say maybe 2-3 pounds.

Happily wormin' away

My new Worm Factory is just awesome! I'm so happy that I shelled out the money for it. Plus, on Saturday I bought another pound of worms as I decided I don't want to wait for the population to grow when I have so much fruit and veg waste (hooray for summer!) already piling up.

The good:
-Composting happens, and fast! There's a lot of beautiful crumbly compost in the first tray I set up.
-No smell (the old poorly constructed Rubbermaid tub bin had a tendency to get AWESOMELY stinky).
-Super easy… Continue

Finally: The Worm Factory!

After much neglect and many bad habits, my Rubbermaid tub bin went completely downhill. It got anaerobic, and stinky -- many worms tried to escape and only ended up crispy and dead on the carpet (much to my girlfriend's extreme displeasure), while others died in the bin. A while ago I had decided to go ahead and invest in a well designed bin. I read a lot about different models and got some great advice right here from all you wonderful vermicomposters, so I settled on getting a Worm Factory. I… Continue

Wild Worms

Okay, so I know everything you read is really clear on how you can't just go in the back yard and dig up some worms and throw them in your bin. But... well... I did it anyway.

I went over to my mom's house yesterday and she's been telling me for months (whenever I talk about my worms) how she has red worms in her compost pile outside. So she and I dug around in her compost and, sure enough, she has worms that look suspiciously like EFs. They are red and stripey and even have the little yellow s… Continue

Worm powered lettuce!

I got some lettuce starts a few weeks ago and planted them in a big shallow pot with a mix of old potting soil and lots of worm compost. They're doing really well! My girlfriend is terrified of eating anything grown in "worm poop" though so this lettuce might just be for me, the rabbit, and the hamster, if I can't bring her around to reason (dude, the whole world is made of worm poop! mellow out!)

Experimenting with that Boreal Wormer design

I've been a little frustrated feeling like my plastic tub bin isn't getting enough air, so I decided to try to add some additional aeration. I'm starting easy -- I added a PVC pipe (slightly more than a dollar at the hardware store) with lots of tiny tiny holes drilled in it running through the bin, inspired by The Boreal Wormer. I only added a pipe to one side (I haven't had a chance to drill holes in the second one), and I pushed all the beddi… Continue
