Subtle lessons from experience

Six weeks ago I finished re-building my FT. Some things I have learned since then.

1)       Worms like crushed leaves - but not if they are too dry.

2)       Drawers without slider mechanisms will absorb moisture and swell shut and be almost impossible to open

3)       My worms can handle more food than I originally thought

4)       A worm bin can act as a work area for sifting leaves, drying out VC etc...

1) I was placing food then dry crushed…

FT Mistakes of late

04/14/2011Update- Well the new FT is finished and I am very happy with the outcome. Pictures can be found at The first pictures are what happens when you use spray in foam insulation in a wall - bad idea! The rest of the pictures are of the new bin during and after construction.

Other than a few small mistakes…

The great rice heater experiment

2010-10-06 - Conclusions: It appears that the rice did raise the temperatures slightly, although I do not believe that the small amount that it raised the temperature would do much good. I am leery of adding much more than I already have.

I know that people have had over heating issues with rice and I wonder what the starting temps were when the rice was added. At the low temps we have had lately (compost was in the high 60's), I am of the belief that the bacteria,…

My First Rotary Vermicompost Harvester

I've been watching the site for about a month now. Researching, looking into the FT designs and looking at the harvester for separating the VC. In the past I have had a couple of 3 X 3 frames that have ¼ and 1/8 screening on them. They are a pain to use. I decided to make a rotary harvester. I'm a little…

Hi Larry:
Welcome! It's good to see another Chicagoland person on the forum. I just started my bin about 5 weeks ago.

Thanks Larry for making it public. Can you please get some more photos of your two screenings in details? I have to convince my 14 year old son to make one for me !

Larry thanks so much for posting the great photos of your cedar bin. I'm planning to build a similar one (but without heater) with scrap lumber and yours is the best inspiration I've found so far. Would you mind sharing how much food you put into it each week? I'm trying to determine what size I should make mine. Also, how deep is your VC? Do you find you need the full height of the bin?
