I eat way healthier then before. I used to never eat anything green besides lettuce. Now I eat lots of broccoli and asparagus which provides a good amount of cellulose to feed to the worms. I still eat a good amount of pizza though, those boxes ma...
Well, I moved my outdoor bin inside for a few days. I placed it inside a larger bin. What I found today was some of the worms had tried to escape and were in the bottom of the larger bin. My worms haven't tried to escape for about a month. Plus, m...
In my BSFL bin, I found a family of worms today. They must have been in the material I moved from the worm bin to the BSFL bin in order to get the BSFL out of my worm bin. The worms in the BSFL (about 16) are at all stages, from babies to adults. ...
I looked outside on the balcony where my Worm and BSFL bin are, and low and behold, I saw an adult BSF! I am not sure if it hatched from one of my BSFL, or was just attracted to the smell of the BIN. I hope it laid some eggs before it left!
Given...
Andrew, I like the photos showing the architecture of your bin. My simple bucket is back to being super active with the "soothing" sound of BSFL churning. I am truly amazed with the ability of the mature BSFL. They are often moving on my balcony f...
Check out the folks at Growing Power, http://www.growingpower.org/blog/
They grow food for the urban poor and also vermicompost. It appears they use a system similar to what you are thinking about doing.
Josh this sounds like a great project. Keep us updated and I would love to see it in action once you get it up and running. With a volume so high, it seems like large tumbler sifter would be ideal in order to separate the worms from the compost. I...
Well it looks like my BSFL are having a second wind. I opened the worm bin today and I saw a half loaf of bread I put in the bin earlier in the week teeming with BSFL. The weather warmed up more this week so that may have contributed. Interesting ...
A bin with Black Soldier Fly Larva instead of worms. They have been a curse to some vermicomposters. Like Kevin, I'm trying to use them in a separate bin to process food waste the worms can't handle (meat, dairy, excess citrus, etc.). I haven't tr...
Sorry, I should I mentioned in the original post and not one of my replies that this is my BSFL bin, not a worm bin even though a few worms live in it. I wouldn't let my worm bin get this bad. Regardless, I dumped a lot of leaves in the BSFL bin a...
I have to say that bin looks way too wet to me. If worms are not be able to breathe down in there, things will start to rot and smell bad. The bin should be damp like a forest floor, not like sopping wet mud. Have you checked lately to see if your...
I am bringing mine in when freezing is forecasted. Like bill said, there are many reports of worms surviving even in icy conditions, but I don't want to risk it. I don't want to pay 20 bucks for a new batch and it is not a big hassle to bring mine...
Ah great, I live in Knoxville TN, (Home Town is Brentwood), So I know all to well what you are facing. I havn't faced a winter with an outdoor bin yet but I doubt the worm factory will keep the worms from freezing if we get a day or 2 of freezing ...
My mini-bin is only 6" x 11" x 4" H. It might hold a gallon. I put coir in the bottom & the grubs I bought came in sawdust. The entire bin fits into the cooler. I'm going to try and avoid too much liquid by controlling what I feed them. I took video of my setup and will try to edit it for posting by tomorrow. I'll keep notes on your setup if I ever 'graduate' to more grubs and a larger bin. You're obviously doing something right if you can avoid the stink & mush.
Yup, that's me. LOL. That was my first post there. Alright! So we're both going to experiment a little this winter. I'm guessing zone 7 is cooler than zone 9 in the winter? And you're going to keep yours outdoors? I received my grubs yesterday and just set up the mini-bin. My colony is small enough to keep indoors for now, but we'll see how that goes after some residue/compost builds up.
