I was given advice to use parrafin wax to coat the wood....which is what we plan on doing when we finally build ours

How big is your bin? I can't imagine adding 6 banana skins to my bin at one time, but I'm just in a worm factory.

I add banana peels all of the time and haven't noticed any issues, but I don't know.

"I just add extra water on a fairly regular basis and use the worm tea." If you mean you use the water that drains through your castings and is collected at the bottom, that's leachate, not worm tea. Very different stuff. :) I went through my cast...

I don't mind touching the worms. I had an issue with it at first, but now I'm over it.

I'm still confused Moni. So what didn't work....it takes time to get the vermicompost, you've been goin' for a couple of weeks, right? How many worms do you have? Air, would be a good thing, though. I also see you using a hose to water your bin......

Our little garden

Here's our garden...we're still workin' on it. We're horrible procrastinators, so I think we're going to pay for getting such a late start, but we've also been out of town for 6 of the last 8 weeks, so getting an early start would have been hard. The garden will still be extended by another 3-4 feet this weekend

In the window bed that you can see, we'll have peas and strawberries...we alr… Continue

Checked on the worms today...

saw some unhappy little guys...I have the top bin full of newspaper and there were 2 or 3 up there in that bin who were dying. Not sure if they left because they were unhappy or explored up there and were dying since it was so dry....
I added a handful of ground up eggshells, added about a pound of food, since there was still some huge pieces of watermelon rind left from last weeks feeding (they were given to me from a neighbor and were already a little icky, and I was in a hurry to go on a quic… Continue

Got my mother's day present!

We went and got my mother's day present today. We decided to get just 1 lb of new wormies so I could also get a bag of Barefoot Soil Deluxe Potting mix. I poured the worms in and grabbed a handful....I forgot how cool they look when they're all curled together....I haven't seen a group together like that in a while, mine apparently have LOTS of room in the bin.....so now my wormies have friends.

Tomorrow I plan on filling my newspaper pots with the potting soil and getting my seeds planted.

Lots of 'milestones'

Yesterday marked the end of my first month of vermicomposting. So far everything is going really well. My only issue is the flies, but I haven't tried the t-shirt trick yet. I think that will be my next step for the week. It wouldn't be so bad, except the bin is in my kitchen, right next to the dinner table. Right now I have the ACV and Dawn thing working for me. I'm contemplating putting a dish of it on top of my bin. LOL. The food I added today was frozen for over 2 weeks, but the second it th… Continue
