I'm not a big fan of adding crushed shells to the worm bin. I've heard of people who have killed off their bin because of the sudden change in pH. More importantly, since we are really into organic gardening the crushed eggs shells can more benefici…

I tend to think going to the extra expense of buying rather pricey 1/4 mesh wire for the bottom to be a waste of money/effort/time. I'd much rather deal with the occasional rodent. However, since I turn my compost fairly regularly this has never bee…

My latest bin (now about 2 months old) is actually a wooden box I had made as a chicken brooder. It's about 5'x2' with 2 different compartment (originally to brood chicks and pheasants separately). Each compartment has a top lid made of wire (framed…

I raised bees with my brothers and Dad for years as a kid/teenager. I truly loved it and would love to do so again---but a good neighbor friend of mine is deathly allergic to bee stings. Backyard beehives are still one of my favorite things---I am t…

From what I've been told any newspaper is fine, except the glossy paper inserts. Color ink isn't a problem, especially in newsprint.

Where does one buy BSFL to get started? Also, since I live in the North and it is beginning to get colder, is this possible to do indoors (especially regarding the issue of new eggs being laid that will not involve hundreds of soldier flies buzzing…

True, I just gleaned about 200 worms from my outdoor raised beds and put them in one of my inside worm bins. Most stayed on top and dies within a day (actually, if was enough death to cause a major stink when I opened the lid).

I have two outdoor tumblers (converted plastic 55-gal drums) and have been less-than-pleased with them. While I have no problems maintaining good heat in my regular compost piles, I can never get these things to heat up at all---regardless of my pay…

The Ikea shelves are called OMAR. This is the Canada page ... http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/search/?query=omar I imagine the US side should have the same. It comes in different variations and one unit can be stacked on top of another so you can adjust…

You have a sick, twisted mind my vermicomposting friend.

I can't answer that, but remember that near 100% of the worm eggs will fall through. I remember seeing packages of worm castings for sale that didn't appear to have any eggs. Not sure what method they use to remove those.

Do you have a pic or a link to this stand? It sounds like a good option for me.

That works for the top, are you insulating the sides as well? If the bin is wide and deep enough can you get away with not insulating the sides? I've looked at a lot of bin heating ideas and I think I would prefer to not go to the extent of using el…

If you have the room and don't need the compost right away I found that half done compost is a great way to seed a new bin with worms and bedding. It gives the new bin some worms and cocoons to get started. Also, the worms get a 'familiar' layer of…

I have increased the depth of the layer of shredded paper with the onset of colder autumn weather and the first observation is more stable and acceptable temperature of the bin. Probably relates to the air trapped in the paper acting as an insulatio…

My 5-gallon mini flow through bucket

I have been given a couple 55-gallon plastic drums (one is now a tumble composter) and I plan on turning the other one into a flow through style vermicompost bin (as seen elsewhere on this site). However, I wanted to experiment a little first before tearing into what was a rather hard to find barrel. So I am experimenting with a 5-gallon bucket. Veteran vermicomposters may already be doing this (or perhaps know better not too----we shall see). I just followed the design of the larger bind, which… Continue

Compost Bin using only coffee grounds

I am about 3 months into my first (plastic bin) vermicompost bin and things seem to be going well (though my poor worms did struggle with some major noob mistakes on my part initially).

Now I am about to start my 2nd bin. I just received three 5-gal pails full of starbucks expresso coffee grounds. We regularly add our home coffee & filters to the initial bin, but I am considering trying to compost only with expresso used grounds in the second bin. No food scraps, no bedding, no filters, jus… Continue

It would be a little full, but it might work. You wouldn't want to leave all of them in there for very long. You definitely need more than 100. Have you had many cocoons yet? Do you still have a 2nd bin to put part of them in? From what I've read, you want between 1/2 and 1 lb of worms per square foot of surface area. I'm guessing if you put 1 lb in the 5 lb bin it would be a little crowded. If you put all of them in the 1 bin you'll get great compost quickly but you'll suppress reproduction.

Josh, we were trying to ignore the bad post and just let it go away. Please don't respond to the Hitchcock Center posts. If no one clicks on it, it will get buried.

How is your mini flow through going? I'd be interested in knowing if it works or it's just too small. Maybe you could give us an update on your blog?
