About Me:

Started worming late last spring and did really well until the end of summer until I had a major die off. I was able to save about 25% of the survivors. Still recovering. The new blue worms are doing well, they are sort of private, but no escapes and thriving. My son tried a science experiment with some Canadian Night Crawlers and Red Wrigglers, but the NCs died after a few days and the EFs after about 10 days. We believe either the food was contaminated with pesticides or the new plastic bins were off gassing chemicals. Only lost 24, and not sure the NCs were all that healthy to start with. I would love to begin to sell worms, supplies, casting, but I still need to learn more about these guys.

The plan is moving ahead. I ordered the bags. I separated out some PEs into another smaller container, this morning. I hope they hold over Ok in there. The PEs, by the way, love watermelon and cucumber. I see that you are feeding your Wigglers the same. I still don't know when the bags will get here or when I can ship them but we are moving in the right direction. I will keep you informed as we progess on this end. We got rain yesterday and it knocked the heat down some. The worms seem back to normal for now but we have more heat coming. I will write more on this later.

I tried to get the breathable bags from vermitechnology but no call back from them today. Something is up with the PEs. They are all balled up at the top of the bins like they want to escape. The only environmental change that I know of is oppressive heat. It has really been hot here and the bins are outside. I am hoping it cools a little soon and that it does not kill the worms. I will keep you informed of the progress. Dwayne

I am not interested in selling you the Blues. I will however, give you some. Let me make a few points. First I am not an expert so I am not certain they ARE Blues. I think they are based on pics and physical descriptions including fast reproduction and fast composting. Second, I have never shipped live worms. I have observed how others have done it from two different growers and they did it the same way. Breathable bag with peat moss and newspaper through USPS. I was looking at buying some breathable bags yesterday in anticipation of sending you some. Third, my bins are outdoors. As you can see from my page I have other critters, including Soldier Fly maggots. In harvesting the little worms I will do my best to make sure no maggots (or other critters) go along for the ride but I think it is impossible to guarantee that they won't. Soldier Fly maggots are in everything here. I get them in my compost pile, coffee waste buckets and bins. You probably have them in TX in compost piles. If you read on them they are not that bad but really gross some folks out. When they start they are very small. Lastly, I cannot say how many PEs I have or can send. I put some of them in my big concrete block bin but I think I can get you enough for a start once I get the bags. Like I said they reproduce, grow and compost fast. Let me know if you want to chance the critters. Oh, I will copy how others ship but as I have never done it I am not certain they will get there alive. I know what dead worms smell like and it is not good. On the other hand shipping worms should not be rocket science...should it?? Let me know. Dwayne

I think I'm going to go with the Rubbermaid bin too. Seems pretty straightforward to drill a few holes in it for ventilation.
