"I put all the material in my plastic bins, and only put the compost in the worm factory when I want it to dry out. It runs through a screen better when it is slightly on the dry side."

Composting at school.

A family friend works at a school and one of the teachers mentioned something about the 5th grade starting to compost. They want to start composting at the school outside (no worms tho) She volunteered me to come in and talk about composting (luckily I don't mind). I figure the kids are about 9- 11 years old and have about a 20 minute attention span for something like this. There are 2 small classes about 36 children in total. I'm going to take in a small bin of finished compost and worms. A…See More

Profile Information

When did you start composting with worms?
April 20, 2010
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?
researching composting on google
What do your worms like to eat?
watermelon rinds dissapears in like 4 days
What kinds of worms do you have?
red worms
What worm bins do you use?
worm factory 360, and a few self made bins
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
probably 20 - 25 pounds a week, no joke (4 people in my house)
About Me:
I started composting outside in April 2010 with 2lbs (2000) red worms. First I used a Rubbermaid bin but I eventually ordered the worm factory 360 with 6 trays and I love it. Having 2 bins allows me to alternate feedings every other and gives me flexibility so I don't over feed. Occasionally I still dump food in my regular compost bin with shredded leaves. I would estimate that I probably have 4 lbs of worms in the WF 360 and probably a pound in another bin. I moved the bins into the garage when it started to get cold and once I got rid of all the fruit flies I brought the bins inside and put them in my boiler room. I estimate that I am keeping 1000 - 1200 pounds out of the landfill per year.

There are a couple of different kinds of shredders. Strip cut, cross cut, and micro cut.  Well I pretty much over do everything.... so I went out and bought a heavy duty micro cut shredder. It can shred 16 pages and can shred for 20 minutes straight. This thing grinds cardboard into confetti sized pieces with no problem.  I most definitely did NOT need this but I got a bonus check I got bored and I'm always looking to make vc faster. :)

The top left photo is a board that I use as a template for when I drill holes in the bin. I don't measure exactly but I try to make the holes somewhat uniform (OCD).  Then I cut window screen the size of a quarter and hot glue it over the 1/4 inch holes. I took a few worms and put them in the smaller containers. A few months later they multiplied like crazy.…

Egg tray

I added one of these paper pulp egg trays to my bin and my worms went crazy over it. I could not believe the amount of worms attacking this thing. It fit perfectly in the 360

Not my picture but that is what I'm talking about

Welcome, Jason! I too had to upgrade to multiple bins to keep up with my family's waste. My goal is to throw away no cardboard, paperboard, paper or food waste. I am getting close!

Welcome to the forum, Jason. That's an excellent trommel you built. Where did you find the sauna tube? That's an amazing amount of food you're feeding your worms. How often do you feed each bin? You may want to consider a pre-composting bin if you have excess scraps at some point. It would not need to be in the shade. You can throw in things like apple cores, broccoli stems, carrots, etc....things that take longer to get soft. Then again, maybe better not mess with something that's working well for you. Keep up the good work!

That makes sense, that paper can be reused, and veg scraps cause methane. Interesting to think about. Thanks!

I enjoyed your blog on blogspot. I started using my 360 at Thanksgiving. So far so good. It has been interesting learning all the things that go into the different composting methods.
