Four kids under the age of seven!!!! Man, I bet they keep you busy! Let me know if the shredded newspaper helps. I think that the gnats like to use moist cardboard to breed in so if you use that, I would try to keep it buried.

We don't really like the rubbermaid bin. We think that it is too deep and does not provide enough airflow. Take a look at our website, specifically the blog and you can see the bins that we use. We also do not use covers and we do not have drainage holes. If done properly, drainage holes are not needed. I would recommend switching to a bin like ours and then using burlap or the t-shirt along with a layer of dry shredded newspaper. In the meantime or if you continue to use the rubbermaid bin, I would work on keeping the area below the bin clean and dry. The fungus gnats need a moist area to breed and if you don't give that to them, they'll go away. Let me know what you think.
