On the cave affect, you want the compost to hang up a bit if you are using a mechanical harvesting method. Otherwise the weight of the compost will push down on the moving parts too much, preventing them from working properly. In any case the comp...

I have only harvested by scraping my barrel twice. Both times the compost slid down to the bars in around a week. The second time i believe it was 8 or 9 days. Most of the time the compost slowly falls down a little bit at a time. I am talking ab...

You can harvest your worms and move them into a new bin. You may get a large part of them to recover by removing them form the situation. Don't toss out the sick bin. Stop feeding it bin and let it sit. If there is any identifiable food items in ...

C DuLaney, All foods even veggies have some proteins in them. Its just a matter of how much. The best explanation of protein poising i have gotten went like this. The worms cant pick and choose when they eat, they just slurp the food up. Eating ...

And how was your Friday the 13th ?

That Dar... ah, sweet lovable kitty

Today we had the first good snow storm of the season. There have been others but they didn't amount to anything.

When i got home the power was out. And, The kitten had turned over my five gallon tote of finished compost. I had put it in the house to keep warm. There was compost all over the living room and kitchen floors. He apparently had a ball dive bombing through it all day. The compost was almost dry so at least it was easy to sweep up. But i was surpri… Continue

Heater Update - one month, Part 2

I checked out the bin today expecting to have to bail out a sea of mud and was surprised. The whole thing is drying out a lot faster than i would have expected. And i had gotten the new tote and screen all ready to filter the water out too.

But it does look as thou it got wetter before things started getting dryer. The hole i made and the extra cardboard up top did make a remarkable difference.

First i put 4 layers of cardboard on top of the cardboard that was already there. To try to keep mor… Continue

Heater Update - one month

I had to chuckle when i reread one of my own comments on my last blog. "So i added water to the catchment area, i don't plan to harvest again until spring, so extra water down there won't hurt anything"

That has to be one of the worst predictions i have ever made. As you may recall I put a coil of heating hose in the catchment area. With so little air movement everything is very wet. Steam? rises up through the compost wetting everything in the FT.

The whole thing is wetter then any tote i hav… Continue

Fall - sigh..

Despite all my planning for cold weather i wasn't expecting it to hit quit so fast. Just 3 days ago the weather was in the low 80'sF (25C). Two nights ago it snowed in the higher mountains. This morning i had to scrapping ice off the car windows.

It only got to 60 (15C) today. I was unpleasantly surprised to find my worm bin even colder when i got home this evening, 48F (9C). I still haven't bought the sheet insulation for the bin so i was forced to improvise. I wrapped the bin and the bucket o… Continue

Its a small world

In town today i spotted a old Isuzu pickup with a "support global worming" sticker on the tailgate. My thought. Well its a small world and I'm not all that alone here abouts. Later during the 30 mile drive home i spotted the Isuzu again, right in front of me when turning off onto my road. Real surprised to find he only lives 3 miles from me. Kind of makes me feel like i am not so alone in this worming thing.

And then there was another nice surprise. A pile of horse poo in my driveway. Couldn't… Continue

Hi Eve,
How are you and the worms? Coping OK with the cold I hope.
How much of the purchased manure do you feed the worms each time? A whole bag full? And have you fed them rice as well?
Take care,
Sue

I love that bin! When i used the water heater type, the hose went INSIDE the bin and dump that antifreeze.
I think that is why you are losing heat. Your bin should be warmer, my flow through is an average 80 degrees F. I am using the wire heater I got from Vermico.

Thank you for all of your helpful advice Eve. I've decided to invest in one of the No'Squitos and see how it goes. Seemed like a great time to, since I've found lots and lots of little fly's inside the bin. The last feeding was frozen, defrosted, and processed into mush... though a just eaten banana peel had been put in a day or so before that. I made up 4 of the baited cut water bottles and put them inside. Bugs bugs go away! :-p. ..Hope you have happy holidays, thanks again :)
