When did you start composting with worms?
April 15, 2007
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?
I was looking for a way to "recycle" my food scraps in a dorm, and I was friends with a grad student who already had some worms.
What do your worms like to eat?
Root veggies! Anything green as well--but they like starches the best.
What kinds of worms do you have?
Eisenia foetida, or red wrigglers, inhabit my humble Blue Box.
What worm bins do you use?
I wish to update my bin soon...at present I've got a small plastic blue bin that I've covered with paper, and drllled holes in the top and sides. I've got no drainage--which I should remedy.
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
Since my bin is so small, the worms go through only about 1 lb. per week.
About Me:
I'm a student in Organic Agriculture at Washington State University. I'm trying to find a way to make composting feasible in the dorm--although I'm in an apartment now.

Links to visit!

It may not be directly related to worms or composting, but please visit these folks from Salina, Kansas and give them some support. The researchers there are trying to develop a perennial wheat--this would create a Midwest agriculture more like the natural prairie ecosystem. Here at WSU, the Winter Wheat Breeding Lab is cooperating with the Land Institute to make this dream a reality.

Scintillating Success!

I returned to find the contents of my bin reduced in size by half, moderately moist, totally devoid of visible fungus, bereft of flies, and hosting a slightly increased population of white mites. The only food left in it was a whole carrot.

Success!

I aerated, added some parsley stems and new bedding, and called it beautiful. My worms were languidly lazing about--they're due to receive some old sage leaves and sprouted potato soon. Currently these items are busy being frozen. Lovely, lovely.… Continue

The moment of Truth

I've been away from my indoor bin for nearly a month now. Tomorrow I return, to find...what?
Before leaving, I did a complete renovation of the contents. New bedding, new worms, new feeding regimen.
Now I freeze EVERYTHING before adding it in. It seems to be working to keep the flies out.
I didn't redesign the bin. I wanted to get some new drainage workings, but in the interest of time (and to have a place for my new worms to live) I just used the same bin, cleaned out. We'll see if it co… Continue

Rehaul Imminent

All right. It seems I have to start anew. I'll start by getting me a bigger bin, then devising a drainage scheme, then selecting a container to freeze scraps in.
Today is Sunday, and I wasted the day cooking scrumptious things (rather than messing around with wormies), and so I don't know if I'll have time to do this soon...
But I should--and I know it. There is no unbearable stink now, but I have a terrible feeling that it might start to if I don't take action. So, I will endeavor to sec… Continue

I need drainage!

It's been too long.

I've slowly come to the realization that if I wait to update my little blue bin any longer, my worms will either drown or suffocate. This will not do.
With three roommates, making sure the wormbin is healthy and stink-free is of the utmost importance. Right now, there is an ominous odor of sulfur emanating from the little box. It's time to invest in a new bin, one that can handle all the scraps we generate and that I can drill holes in the bottom of without cracking the whol… Continue
