A group for outdoor vermicomposters. Those who keep their bins, pots or containers outside or have in-ground or above-ground worm houses, exposed to the elements.

Hi Bentley, Hmm, I thought the beds were already having worms in them. It is funny to get weird stuff popping up in un expected places yes, however.. I should be a bit carefull with the seeds. I have a big garden and am growing historic "forgott...

Hi Bart, I probably view the term "problem" with a slightly perspective than some at times - and weed seeds is definitely one of those times. In all honesty, I am really mellow and laid back about this sort of thing. I constantly have little plant...

HI Bentley, So don't you have problems with the seeds? I almost have a feet of buffer under the big bin, so I hope the worms will keep in this buffer area until the heat has gone in the layers above a bit. In that buffer zone is enough food for ...

Hey Bart, I certainly HOPE it won't get that hot! There are a lot of worms in that bed. This is why I am adding materials slowly over time. By the time it is at its max height the serious winter weather will be here. My aim is to keep it as close ...

HI All, Daft, I had been reading Bentley's winter composting blogpost weeks ago. And I didn't add things up. Been running around too much. Bentley, those windrows, do they get hot enough to kill weed seeds? Cheers Bart

HI All, Well I do hope it will heat up. My plan is that it'll heat to 50 Celsius ( 122 Fahrenheit ) for 14 days, then I will turn it and get some air in. When it has been that hot, all the seeds are cooked. The bin is now full till the last hori...

I wasn't sure about the heat, but it sounds like there are ways to overcome that issue.

Hi Dwayne. I was thinking about getting a Worm WigWam and someone suggested I spend $40 and build a 4 x 8 outside bin rather than spending $700 on the Wigwam.

I read that you have an outside bin. I was wondering if the temps in Florida have created any issues for your worms? I live in Tampa and it sometimes reaches 100 degrees. Is that too hot for an outside bin?

Hey Dwayne, can you talk a bit about the 2x4 tilth bin? Are the worms straight in it, or containerized inside of it? How does it drain? Are the vents covered with screen on the inside? Do you keep it outside? Expected lifespan? Thanks,
Eden

Hey Dwayne,

I wanted to give you an update on how the worms you sent me are doing. They adjusted to the new bin really fast, or maybe they were just hungry from the trip. I've had a problem keeping the moisture level just right, with my EFs they tend to get too wet, but these guys I can't keep wet. I just moved them to a smaller bin, that should allow them to be in deeper bedding and compost. The large flat surface of the other bin, while ideal for EFs, just wasn't working for them, they really like to be buried in the compost and bedding and they just kept it really spread out. Hopefully that is the answer until there numbers are up enough to fill the larger bin.

It turns out the eagle projects will have to wait, on the immediate horizon are two different science projects. We'll be heading to the local bait shop for at least one more specimen this weekend.

Thanks again this journey has been quite an adventure.

On the title bar, i.e. where it days "Dwayne's Photos" of your photos module you should see an "Edit" button. You should be able to change it there to select whether or not you want thumbnails vs slide show.

Btw, from your profile pic..looks like you're an angler.. my sister and I just tried to learn how to fish over labor day.. basically just showed up at a bait and tackle shop and said "um.. what do we need and what do we do?". I didn't catch anything but my sister caught this catchfish on her second cast!

Profile Information

When did you start composting with worms?
April 29, 2008
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?
I wanted to find a way to keep my granddaughter’s fishing worms alive. I found that worms compost garbage and was intrigued by the concept. I bought Mary Appelhof’s book after doing some internet research and went to a Worm Conference.
What do your worms like to eat?
Any vegetable and fruit wastes from my home. They like watermelon, cantaloupe, and coffee grounds. I also have an above ground bin with horse manure in it.
What kinds of worms do you have?
Eisenia Fetida, Perionyx Excavatus and African Nightcrawlers (Eudrilus Eugeniae)
What worm bins do you use?
I have a 2x4 wooden Tilth bin, a 3x4 concrete block above ground bin, 18 gallon plastic bin, Can-O-Worms and an ordinary compost pile. All are outdoors in Florida.
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
5-10 pounds approximately. I think.
