I had protein poisoning when I had too much food way down at the bottom of the bin and it got anaerobic and stinky. The worms died, making more gas and stink. It was a vicious cycle until I cleaned out the bin, separated the good worms out and sta...

Never bought organic bananas before the worms, now that is all we buy. Between scraps for the worms and better stuff for the guinea pigs, we buy a lot more produce. Except in the summer when we grow our own.

Hello Mark, What a coincidence, this is the first box I found when I started searching for plans six years ago. I built mine similarly based on it. I wanted it to be small and the lid just resting on top and with few components as possible. I've b...

Duff, there are several site on the net with wooden worm box plans. I like the ones that use exactly one sheet of plywood. It's a fun project because tolerances aren't critical. Here's one site: http://tinyurl.com/yku3rep.

They will break down but depending on how thick the shavings are it may take a while.

Just got my two guinea pigs and they use aspen shavings for bedding. I assume this and their poops would make marvelous worm bedding? Hope so as there is a lot of both !

I agree ! Monsterworms.com are the very best. Not only do they have great worms, but they are very helpful about answering questions. I had a bunch when I first started my bins and they were always very gracious with their time and had lots of pat...

I agree, start slow when feeding a new bin. Here is a tip I have for really increasing your herd without too much danger of overfeeding. Only do this if you really like to mess around in the kitchen. Take a paper egg carton and put it on a cookie ...

Hi Duff,
Thank you for you the compliment on my article. Let me know how it goes and if you need any help. Also, I see that you have been composting for years. Me too!! This morning I put on a blog post that you might think is cute. Duff- I have a 5 tray Gusanito bin. On the very bottom is the liquid catch tray. Then I put a sheet of landscape fabric on that to keep the worms from going down there. Then I have my 'bottom' tray which is full of worms, castings, and bedding and I no longer feed that tray, I am leaving it to let the worms finish their work in it. Then on top of that I have my 'active' tray with worms and bedding and this is the tray I am feeding now, will continue to feed it til it gets full. Then on top of that, I put a spare empty tray UPSIDE DOWN, like a dome with the mesh on top. This keeps the air flow nice and keep smy bin from getting too wet. (If your bin is outside with the breezes, this is probably not necessary). Then I put the 'A' shaped roof on top of that but leave it slid back a few inches to leave a nice wide air gap to the upside down dome tray mesh.

This still leaves me two empty trays. For now I keep them stored in the basement. I might get three trays with worms going at some point and use another added tray- but I would still only be feeding the top tray of the ones with worms.

Beth- there is certainly no harm in storing the empty trays right on your bin on top of the feeding tray. It's just the possibility of a beginner putting the new feeding tray on TOP of those stored empty trays that is the little issue we are discussing. :)
