Good luck Celeste! Are you going to use the light-over-the-pile method to harvest? It worked pretty well for me, but be sure to spread newspaper or a tarp- harvesting is messy. >>The worms are also starting to wonder a lot more, prolly cause I ha...

Hey Jason, you've really become one of our local experts. Thanks for all the great advice. Congrats!

I just received a pound of redworms last week. This is my first experience with reds. My previous bin was all Euros. One of my first impressions of the reds was that they are great eaters right off the bat. I can't wait to see what they'll be doin...

Excellent! I think my worms' appetites are really starting to pick up now too- my bin is a month old now. Food seems to be disappearing faster now. So great that you already have new babies in your bin!

The worms are really going at it now. Quite a bit of food has just disappeared. I gave them a large feeding today, hopefully not too big, we'll see how it goes.

I assume the worm you're thinking of that eats worms is the Land Planarian, but that isn't an earthworm it's a flatworm. As far as I know there isn't an earthworm that eats other earthworms, and any worm you'd be using for composting would never c...

there is one worm that does eat worms. You will have to research it to find it and it looks very different than the traditional compost worm. I think you are safe and just have a different breed of worm in there. Today while gardening I found a De...

Thanks guys, I am thinking he's probably a different species of worm... I'll try to take a picture if I catch him again.

Broccoli stalks are the toughest food to break down, in my experience. But if you slice them up thinly before adding them to your bin the worms will love it. My guess is that, since they have no teeth, the worms cannot break through the tough cove...

Celeste, are you sure it is not a SLUG? I found a baby slug in my bin not too long ago. Actually this is the 2nd. time a slug is found in the bin.

Wow! I think you should name him Moby Dick....the Great White Whale-Worm. It sounds like maybe he could be a different species. Now you have us all waiting for a picture! A photo with him and a 'normal' worm both in your hand would be great to jud...

I've never seen a crazily fat worm in my bins, unfortunately. I'm sure it's healthy though, and I don't think a worm could eat another worm if it wanted to. If you see it again be sure to take a picture. I'm sure we'd all love to see it!

I have E. Fetidas in my Rubbermaid style worm bin that I was just feeding when I noticed 1 ridiculously fat worm. It was about as long and FAT as my middle finger, otherwise it looked okay and was active. My question is has anybody else seen this...

About Me:
Just getting started.
I just started gardening last summer after we bought our first home, and that led to composting, which led to worms. Starting my first vegetable garden this spring and very excited.

I'm a Family Medicine intern which means I work a lot, but I find time for gardening and worming cause I'm obsessed. I love spending time out side and breathing in the rich smell of earth.

2nd layer

Well the compost in my first bin is starting to look pretty good now and nearly ready to harvest. The worms are also starting to wonder a lot more, prolly cause I haven't fed them in a couple of weeks. Although they're ignoring some rotten grape tomatoes.
I just started a second layer with bedding, a handful of soil and a head of rotten lettuce. It hasn't had time to mature yet, but I placed it on top of my first bin. I figure it can mature and any worms that have interest can start migrating. I… Continue

Fatty Spotted

I went to throw a little more food in the bin today and this is what I found...

First feeding spot: All food is eaten except for the big broccoli stalk (apparently worms not fans.) No worms left in the area

Second feeding spot: Most food gone, teaming with worms, some good compost forming. Then I saw the fatty, he wasn't that long, just really fat. About the same length and width as my pinky finger. He totally freaked me out at first, but when I got a better look he's definitely a worm, nice e… Continue

More Worms!

Yesterday I drove out to Bennet, CO and picked up another pound of worms from Sandi. After my previous experience with shipped worms have at least a 5% die off rate, I decided it would be better to get more worms from a local source. Also having worms from 2 different sources should increase my genetic diversity... assuming that actually matters in a worm bin (it might not.)
When I got the worms home they all looked pretty healthy and active, not a single one was dead. ( :
I just dumped them on… Continue

cocoons!

Saw my first little cocoons today, and a baby squiggling around in there too.
A couple of wormys are getting way big too.
They're still not going through the food very fast, but I realize now that 500 was clearly way too few to start with, especially given how eager I am for some nice rich worm castings for my plants.
I'm buying another pound of playmates for them today.
