Screening Castings

I think what Susan has is 1/4 inch hardware cloth. I made a sifter 17in x 14in that would sit on top of a cat litter pan and my worm boxes to sift vermicompost after I separated the worms.

Ron, "They have 4 pages just on worm food (do not use poultry manure, too high in ammonia)." As long as you use composted poultry manure you should be ok. I used to get some good poultry manure fro…

Should they eat bread/rice/pasta?

When I found out what cornmeal could do, I thought I had discovered some kind of new heat energy. LOL Thank God I hadn't put that much in my worm box.

I leave a light on above my worm boxes at night with the lid on. I keep the lid on so the bedding doesn't dry out and so the worms can crawl anywhere in the box to eat. If any of the worms decide to peek out from under the lid, they will sense the l…

Ben, I agree with ForestGardenGirl. And here's what I would do. Chop everything up into pieces about the size of a dime or run it through a food processor. Instead of paper shreddings, I would use peat moss and mix well. Make sure that it's very mo…

I have wooden boxes that have no holes. The wood is able to breath enough to loss excess moisture and I remove the lids regularly to allow for good ventilation. But if your bin is too wet, drainage holes would help to get rid of too much moisture th…

Profile Information

When did you start composting with worms?
January 22, 2003
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?
Got to know my first worm in the rain in my first compost pile.
What do your worms like to eat?
In small amounts: corn meal, oat meal, grits, alfalfa meal, coffee grounds, tea grounds, bone meal, cotton seed meal, greensand, rock phosphate, coir, sphagnum moss, ground up egg shells, molasses and honey. In larger amounts: compost, peat moss, fruit & vegetable scraps, ground up cardboard, news paper, chicken manure, rabbit manure, horse manure and some sweet horse and cattle feed. Crazy for pumpkin. Rain water. Occasionally a dead fish from my aquarium.
What kinds of worms do you have?
red worms and european nightcrawlers
What worm bins do you use?
Wooden boxes made of 1/2 inch plywood. 17in. x 17in. and 7 inches deep.
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
Right now less than one. I compost everything down as far as I can and shift it. Then I feed them what they will eat in one day. I have about one pound each of EFand EH.

About Me:
Organic gardening and home improvements are my hobbies. I enjoy growing indoor and outdoor potted plants and vermicomposting has been an ongoing project of mine since 2003. Hurricane Rita temporally put a hold on my worm raising. But now I've purchased more red worms and I'm venturing into raising european night crawlers.

I think some of the ways that I raise my worms may be a little extreme. I believe that I'm being very careful and I monitor whats going on during and after I feed, water and harvest worms and manure. I want to take care of my worms. My goals are to multiply healthy worms and to share what I learn with others interested in vermicomposting.
