How in the heck would you sedate a worm? I've seen photos of different sizes of EFs and it seems like they sit there quietly for at least a few seconds. Not our PEs!

OK... I've worked out the general external description I think. Perionyx excavatus: Young adult have red-brown clitelum, the colour is more light red and the body darker red-brown. If you can catch them on camera, there are 12 segments before the c…

Thanks Susan. Yes the measuring is hard to do without sedating them first and then measure them when relaxed. But so as long as you state it, alive and stretched out is an indication of length nevertheless.

I've been meaning to measure mine for a long time. Thanks for the impetus. When they're stretched out, (looking for something), I've seen them up to 14 cm (that's 6.5 inches for us backward Americans ;-) I'm guessing the diameter at 3 or 4 mm. They…

G'day all, Wonder if you all could post here the largest (length & width in metric) PE you have ever seen, or have in possession. Cheers

I haven't seen ANCs (they're not established here and would be considered invasive), but I heard out worm guru describe the difference between PEs and EFs. One had a clitellum like a cumberbun and the other had a neck brace. To me the blue sheen is…

Look forward to it. Thanks.

G'Day Dwayne thanks for your reply, I have conflicting descriptions and even when it comes to "sizes", it needs to be specified whether we are talking about girth or length. I read in a paper (semi-scientific) that PE Length: 30-180 mm Width: 2.5 -…

Hi folks, Wondered if anyone here can help me with identification between PE and ANC. I would like a quick way to tell the difference rather than having to put them under microscope. Can't seem to find photos on the net with them together.

When did you start composting with worms?
April 1, 2009
How were you introduced to vermicomposting?
I wanted to reduce or even stop having to buy fertilizers for my garden. The kitchen produces lots of waste fruit and vegetables. My existing compost bin breeds cockroaches not worms. I was facinated seeing live worms being sold in boxes on the shelf of a hardware store.
What do your worms like to eat?
MInced lettuce, carrot peels, bruised pears, leftover rice seem to go down well too.
What kinds of worms do you have?
Supposedly: Eisenia fetida, Perionix excavatus, Eisenia andrei, Eudrilus eugeniae and Amynthus spp.
What worm bins do you use?
Can-O-Worms and an experimental (open system) 15L plastic box.
How many pounds of garbage do your worms recycle each week?
500 g approximately

Hey Benno,

I've not had a chance to get a better shot of the front end of the worm. And, it will probably be a couple of days before I can. But, when I do, I'll post them and see what you think.

Thanks,
Robert
