Hey Lisa, That looks beautiful. When did you plant? This year the garden got away from me so I'm surprised to pull anything out of it. We have a stealth pumpkin that is huge and I just saw some purple bell peppers I forgot I planted. We were away ...

My worms live in a Rubbermaid type file box. They were dying until I replaced the bin's plastic lid with this highly specialized piece of equipment.

Dog food is made from meat. Even the dry stuff has bone meal in it. Worms eat the bacteria on vegetable matter. Meat is a big no-no.

How many is too many? Ask the worms. I'd be uncomfortable with so many myself, but what matters is how your worms feel about it--if they're coming toward the surface for food but not clinging to the lid, trying to escape, or curled up in little wo...

Almost everything was imported. Some of the seed plants, birds and insects made it before the 1st Hawaiians. The first Hawaiians brought flowering plants (and a lot more). Everything else (most of what you see here) has been introduced since Captain Cook. Any isolated island is similar to the Galapagos in the sense that the species have become unique and are going extinct fast because of invasive species. Sigh. Worms have been here for 100s of years (or so I've heard.) I'm glad you've joined our group! Susan.

Hey Anna- Not to get cocky.... but I'm an expert. I was originally responding to "What's the worm doing", but wanted to comment on the above post. Springtails are not a problem... However they do like "over-wet" conditions and will explode if the conditions get too wet for the worms. From your picture it is apparent that the worms are suffering from protein poisoning. I would suggest adding finely ground eggshells to lower the acidity. Egg cartons, saw-dust, corrigated card-board all work well to dry out a bin. Mix them in throughout the bin as well as on top.

The worms will always eat faster if you cover the food with a couple of inches worm compost.
And I didn't see any photos, but baby worms are completly clear. Then they turn white; and then red. If you are seeing only little itty bitty (nearly the thickness of thread) white worms then they are probably babies. If they are larger then they are pot worms

The sifter is copied from Jeffrey Schaefers photos he does a fairly good job explaining how to make one.

No problem on the EarthTainer link. I had a bit of a problem running down the pond filters they suggest, but I ended up winging it with a small colander. Last year I grew cucumbers out of it and they went crazy. Good luck.

Listen, going out to throw out the compost is the best part of many days. The further the walk the better. We mix leaves with vegetable scraps. Do you think that's a good idea?

About Me:
I admired the worms in our backyard compost pile while turning it over on a nice day last February. It's not an unpleasant task before the fruit flies and mosquitos arrive but once they do, that activity isn't as pleasant. While we've been devout in composting our garbage for years, it's no fun trekking out there in the winter to dispose of it. I'm a bit anxious whether my worm box is a good environment and have been checking it every day. My husband donated the plastic file boxes and our son (9) helped me set the boxes up, shred paper and add worms. This is just the sort of craziness I'm into along with sewing and knitting, spinning yarn and gardening. I'm an illustrator and a painter.

The Great Migration

I stopped adding food to my first earth worm bin on October 1. I've put my second homemade bin, bottom full of holes on top of it, added newspaper and a little food. Worms were actually starting to travel to the new bin inside of a week. This setup is in my unheated garage. It's cover is an old t-shirt. I'm wondering if when it gets much colder, I can put the plastic lid back atop the bin to hold in heat. I don't know whether this will happen or it will just prevent evaporation, leaving the worm… Continue

Update

The worms seem to be wriggling along nicely. We were away for a week in Maine, came back, everything is status quo. SInce I took today to clean out the fridge, I gave the worms half a head of lettuce, 2 stalks desiccated celery, couple mouldy blueberries, 6 corn tortillas. I want to see what they do with the offering and how fast it disappears. I think I'm moving past the fretful stage. I haven't been feeding them a lot and may step it up to see what happens.

How many is TOO many?

Yesterday June 18, my son made a banana smoothie after school. At 4:00 PM I placed the entire banana peel on the surface of the worm bin contents and replaced the piece of newsprint lying on the surface. I wanted to see how fast the mites and worms could eat it. It hadn't been frozen or ripened, I left it whole so I could possible recognize it for what it was as the process goes along. Today, June 19 12:00 PM, here's what it looks like:

NO. Really?

Well, I think I solved the wet bin problem with better bin ventilation but I have a lot of mites on things. I don't think they're bothering the worms but I took notes from here and Bentley's site to consider some of his wisdom about mites also. I wondered whether I ought to add more w… Continue

Bin Status

Things appear to be going well in my bin. It has taken me awhile to "get it" that my worms are actually eating. After it looked like I might have rounded these creatures up just to smother them in a plastic box, I got a little insecure. A good thing too because I don't have any innate skills to read earthworms, their wants and needs. My problem gave me a tiny glimpse into what a farmer must go through when an animal gets sick. I am grateful to have fellow farmers "right next door" to help out. T… Continue
