Be sure to read the account of the earthworm at the bottom of the transcript. It has an excerpt from the book, all about the worm, not covered in the interview.

"...Throughout human history earthworms have unintentionally but undeniably triggered the rise of civilizations. Wherever earthworms plough, people thrive. When worms perish, societies collapse. Infertile soils led to the demise of the people of ancient Sumeria. Rising levels of salt as a result of irrigating the land with sea water killed off the worms around the mouth of the Euphrates river and the soil turned sour. By 2000 BC their civilization was so weak from lack of food that they fell easy prey to Assyrian invaders from the north...."

In a recent book of the top 100 species of all time, guess what came in at number 1? The earthworm! Here is the interview with the author:

Just ordered my Gusanito system and 2lbs of red wigglers! Woohoo! Never thought I'd be so excited about worms!

Ok, I turned the pile and wetted it down, that seemed to clear the ants out.

Lakeland, Florida. Will ants hurt my worms? I am currently just composting in a pile in the yard, and the worms seem fat and healthy and active, but there are a lot of ants.

Anybody else living in 'Bama? We are usually slow to get with trends, especially recycling-related around here :-)

Dwight, the rule of thumb is 1 pound of worms per square foot of surface area. I'd do a calculation of how many nightcrawlers are in a pound. I hear 1000 wrigglers are in a pound, and would guess 500-750 nightcrawlers are in a pound.

Africans my dear friends, Africans. They are the near perfect worms for this weather. Just note that as nightcrawlers they can tend to wander out if you change their bedding. Keep the light on them for a while to keep them down. I have EFs too, but I like raising monsters.

my mom makes me keep my worms in the backyard. i live in northwest florida, and just stared 9th grade. i did vermicomposting as my science fair project, and just now set up a true vermicompost bin( had my experiment in top soil). just order 2 more pounds of redworms for my bin 'cause i want to get to the piont where i can get vemicompost out about every 2 to 3 weeks. looking into bokashi for meats, dairy stuff.
