Hello fellow Bay Area worm addicts =)
i'm new to vermicomposting and i been thinking to feed my worms some cooked vegies i have been keeping in my fridge. Has any one experience any side effects by feeding these type of foods?
cooked vegies:
potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn
squash, zucchini
seedweed and kelp
if the vegies have been cooked with salt does it hurm the worms? even if i rinse the food i can still taste some of the condiments...
thanks!

Hi Beth,
No, it seems to have passed. I'm letting the bin dry out some and haven't poked around, but there are no ants visible. Hoping they are gone and not down in the VC making a home for themselves. :-0

They never get bored....only hot. You can try pie tins, coffee cans, big lids, whatever.

ok, will do. the bin is already on blocks, but there's no moat :-) good idea about the tape too. seems like less activity this afternoon, so maybe they got bored and left...

Hi Rob, Put it up on blocks. Have the blocks in some kind of container that will hold water and not touch the blocks. Essentially you're making a moat. Put a light over the bin to keep the worms down and put double sided tape on the top of the rim. The ants will get stuck on the tape. Hopefully the worms won't.

Beth, I've got plastic bins... sort of like the Rubbermaid bins, but some other brand... had the foldable tops. Just one bin seems to have the ants, the other bin is several feet away with no ants. Any suggestions on how to make 'em disappear? The bin is fairly damp, so I am leaving the top open to help it dry out some.

Ants are BAD. They steal food and "bug" the worms. What kind of bins are you using.

Are ants bad? I moved some of my worms into bin #2 yesterday and this morning I found a bunch of tiny ants running all over the inside of the bin. There were also several (8 or so) worms crawling up the side of the bin (inside)... do the ants make them want to boogie out of town or is that un-related? I've never had any problems with worms leaving before.
