I guess it's about time for an update. I love the worm bag. Harvesting is a dream. I have two bags going. The first bag I started is moist at the top (where the worms are) and very dry at the bottom. I can open up the bottom and the compost comes out with just a tap on the bag to loosen it. The most recent changeover from 'bin composting' is still uniformly moist so harvesting is a bit more difficult. For one thing, the worms come out with the compost and it's tougher to work loose. I'm assuming in time that it will dry out like Bag #1. I had a brainstorm to add a 'skirt' to the floor around each to make them look a little more classy....bad idea. It was black and the worms wandered out. One day, I found a mass of worms under the tray meant to catch finished compost. I immediately took off the black skirts. I still have a few escapees so I keep a light on at night for them.

Thanks for the mention, Whatknot. :-)
My Canadian site is actually http://www.WormComposting.ca, but RedWormComposting.com is where I generally write about all my fun with worms.
Definitely cool to see other ontario vermicomposters here!

I just transferred my bin over to the bag.
I got my worms from:
http://www.thewormfactory.ca/
via mail order. They are in Westport, ON.
Bentley Christie also sells worms and he is in Elmira, ON.
His website is:

Hope this helps.

Started worm herding 6 months ago and haven't had any serious problems so far. My African Violet blooms are AMAZING, thanks to worm castings. I added a pinch to every vegetable seedling I planted this year. The garden is quite happy. Only one quick question:
Every now and again, I dig into the heap and find a hugely bloated worm. What could this be?
Thanks, Anna!

A good day to all, glad to find some fellow Ontarian Wormers, now I started back in October 2006 with a 2 pounds but soon found out that I had done all the newbie mistakes, but as i rummaged through the bin I was relieved to see a lot of cocoons left by the recently deceased, then it was a waiting game to see more of the worms, until i came across a sight selling cocoons, which i think it's just the best way of getting your population of worms up and running. To this I would like to add that I am astounded at the reciliance of some worms, mainly the pe, I live in a 3 floor high rise with a backyard, I keep some of my shredded newspaper in garbage bags outside & that's where I came to find some of these worms huddled underneath these bags, although i didn't know at the time what type of worm they were I could tell they were different because of their clitellum so close to their heads. just thought I share that story!

Thanks Sherry!
My first experience with Red Worms was back when I was 14. I was working at a horse barn and the huge pile of old horse manure was absolutely LOADED with them. Do I ever wish I had access to that pile NOW!
My first bin was started in my twenties after a co-worker (who had a worm bin under her desk) gave me some. Funny - I almost killed off my first population by adding lots of rice too! Ended up with a huge white worm population as well.
