Larry, I"ve been using vc tea for 9 mo in my plant biz and the results are terrific. I had no damping off on my seedlings this spring and better germination rates on the seeds I experimented with. The only problem I've encountered is having to use it within a day or 2 or it smells really bad. Do you add molasses to your tea? Jean

Lawrence, you mentioned that you use windrows- how well does that work for you?Do you just use manure, do you do it winter and summer? I live in Ne and have lots of horse manure and would like to learn more. Thanks, Jean

I brew about 15 gallons at a time. I bought a bright red 15 gallon plastic bucket with ropes for handles. I put in 15 gallons of rain water. I then put my vermicompost in a metal food strainer and swish this in the water. The castings go thru the stainer but the worms, cocoons and uncomposted stuff does not. I throw what is left in the strainer back into my bin. That way I loose no worms or cocoons. I then aerate the water like Bruce does. When I go to use the tea I turn off the aerator for about 15 minutes to let the fine particles settle. I then take a 5 gallon paint strainer bag and put it around a piece of fencing bent in a circle. The fencing is just slightly smaller than the diameter of a 5 gallon bucket so it just fits inside the bag. I place the fenced bag in the settled tea liquid. I then put my little pump inside the fenced bag and pump out the tea. The bag filters the tea and makes spraying much easier. When all the tea is pumped out I add a little water to the vermicompost left in the red 15 gallon bucket. I stir this mixture up and use it to water my outside plants and trees. This way nothing goes to waste.

The question I have is why do you have to use molasses? Would honey or sugar do just as well?

Lawrence, you could put your vc in the paint strainer bag tied tightly and leave it in the water while you are aerating. The worms and cocoons are not harmed by this as long as aeration is going on and then you could dump the used vc back in your bin. This way you could get more benefit out of batch of vc. As to molasses I think more people quitting using it-Rock in vermigardening had some advice about that. Maybe he will chime in here.

Jean, either way I think would be fine. I just like the idea of not losing any cocoons and worms. Also, I think the castings being dispersed in the water can release more bacteria, but maybe that's not that important since we're brewing the whole thing anyway.

Is there any research on using sugar? It would sure make the whole process cheaper. Also, I've seen dried molasses at Blain's Farm and Fleet. I wonder how much of that you would use per gallon?

Regarding molasses and using it to encourage bacterial growth from the bacteria in VC from Bruce over on the the Worm Expert site, http://wormexpert.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=429&p=1167&hi...

 

"Secondly and more importantly you mention the use of molasses however you want to be sure it is unsulfured molasses. Here I can find it easily at most grocery stores.

Sulfured molasses is made by adding sulfur dioxide as a preservative to young sugar cane which molasses is made from. This will kill off the microbes.

Unsulfured molasses on the other hand is made from mature sugar cane which does not require a preservative and is safe for the microbes."

 

I also recommend reading Teaming with Microbes by Lowenfels & Lewis in order to understand just why VC and VC tea actually work.  I can't recommend it highly enough!
